The Great Barrier Reef will take centre stage as Cairns hosts the world’s first PADI AmbassaDiver Summit in November 2026.

Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef are preparing to welcome some of the world’s most influential scuba divers, underwater storytellers and ocean conservation advocates, with the inaugural PADI AmbassaDiver Summit taking place from 30 November to 5 December 2026.

The international gathering will bring together approximately 14 PADI AmbassaDivers to experience the Great Barrier Reef, share their passion for diving and help promote ocean conservation to audiences around the world.

Organised by PADI in partnership with Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) and Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), the summit represents another exciting opportunity to showcase Cairns as one of the world’s great scuba diving destinations.

For those of us who live, work and dive here in Tropical North Queensland, it’s wonderful to see our region receiving this kind of international recognition.

But what exactly is the PADI AmbassaDiver Summit, why was Cairns selected, and what makes the Great Barrier Reef such an extraordinary place to explore underwater?

What Is the PADI AmbassaDiver Summit?

PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, is one of the world’s leading recreational scuba diving training organisations.

Its AmbassaDiver program brings together individuals who inspire others to explore the underwater world. These ambassadors include professional divers, underwater photographers, filmmakers, adventurers, conservation advocates and influential content creators.

The inaugural summit will provide an opportunity for these international ambassadors to connect, exchange ideas and experience the Great Barrier Reef firsthand.

Rather than being a traditional diving conference, the Cairns summit will combine practical diving experiences with marine education, conservation activities, cultural experiences and storytelling.

The aim is to inspire more people to discover the underwater world while encouraging a greater understanding of why our oceans need protecting.

Why Was Cairns Chosen to Host the First Summit?

Cairns was selected to host the inaugural summit following a successful destination bid by Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

The decision highlights the region’s international reputation for scuba diving, its established marine tourism industry and its direct access to the Great Barrier Reef.

Stretching for more than 2,300 kilometres along Queensland’s coastline, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system and one of Australia’s most remarkable natural environments.

For visitors departing from Cairns, there are opportunities to explore beautiful coral gardens, dramatic reef walls, isolated coral bommies and an extraordinary diversity of marine life.

Depending on the location, season and conditions, divers may encounter reef sharks, sea turtles, giant clams, rays, colourful reef fish and spectacular hard and soft coral formations.

One of the things we particularly love about diving from Cairns is the variety.

Some reef locations are ideal for people experiencing scuba diving for the very first time, while others offer deeper walls, swim-throughs, drift diving and more adventurous experiences for certified divers.

Cairns also provides access to multi-day liveaboard expeditions, allowing divers to spend several days exploring the outer Great Barrier Reef and more remote locations.

Importantly, Tropical North Queensland is home to two internationally recognised World Heritage environments: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest.

This combination of extraordinary marine and terrestrial environments provides visiting AmbassaDivers with opportunities to experience much more than scuba diving alone.

A Special Year for PADI and Cairns

The timing of the summit is particularly significant.

2026 marks PADI’s 60th anniversary and 150 years since the establishment of Cairns.

For six decades, PADI has played an important role in introducing people to recreational scuba diving and developing diver education around the world.

Meanwhile, Cairns has grown from a small tropical settlement into an internationally recognised gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

Today, visitors travel from across Australia and around the world to experience the region’s remarkable underwater environments.

Hosting the first PADI AmbassaDiver Summit during this milestone year is a wonderful recognition of the relationship between Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef and the international diving community.

What Will Happen During the Summit?

The summit program is expected to combine several days of Great Barrier Reef experiences with educational, cultural and conservation-focused activities.

Announced activities include:

  • Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving: Giving international ambassadors the opportunity to explore multiple reef locations and experience life aboard a dive vessel.
  • Marine education with Master Reef Guides: Learning about coral reef ecosystems, marine biodiversity and the environmental challenges facing the reef.
  • Ocean conservation activities: Highlighting the importance of reef protection, responsible diving and sustainable marine tourism.
  • Indigenous cultural experiences: Introducing participants to the cultural connections between Traditional Owners and the region’s marine and coastal environments.
  • Underwater photography and storytelling: Capturing and sharing the Great Barrier Reef with international audiences.
  • Leadership and collaboration: Bringing together people who share a passion for diving, marine education and ocean conservation.

The main Cairns program is scheduled for 30 November to 5 December 2026, with additional regional experiences reported as part of the broader summit initiative.

Specific dive vessels, reef locations and some program details have not yet been publicly confirmed.

Local Cairns dive operators

Local Cairns dive operators are also playing an important role in bringing the summit to life. Tourism Tropical North Queensland has identified Pro Dive Cairns and TUSA Reef Tours as participating operators, highlighting the expertise and professional marine tourism infrastructure available in the region.

For visitors interested in experiencing the Great Barrier Reef themselves, Pro Dive Cairns also operates regular multi-day liveaboard adventures, which are available independently of the summit.

International Diving Ambassadors Coming to Cairns

Among the personalities announced in connection with the summit are television personality and ocean advocate Captain Jason Chambers, professional mermaid and underwater creator Brandee Anthony, and adventure content creator Aakash Malhotra.

Other announced participants include international ocean storytellers and creators from Japan, China and the Philippines.

These individuals bring different experiences, backgrounds and audiences to the summit, but share a common interest in exploring and protecting the underwater world.

Through photography, video and social media, their experiences on the Great Barrier Reef have the potential to reach people who may never have considered visiting Cairns or learning to scuba dive.

For our local tourism industry, this provides an opportunity to share the beauty and diversity of the Great Barrier Reef with a new international audience.

Showcasing the Great Barrier Reef — and the Importance of Protecting It

One of the most important aspects of the summit is its focus on ocean conservation.

The Great Barrier Reef is an extraordinary natural environment, but it also faces significant challenges.

Marine heatwaves, coral bleaching, tropical cyclones and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks can all affect reef health.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) monitors coral reefs across the Great Barrier Reef through its Long-Term Monitoring Program, providing important scientific information about changes in coral cover and reef condition.

Its 2025–26 reporting highlights why continued scientific monitoring and responsible reef management are so important.

It’s also worth remembering that the Great Barrier Reef is an enormous and highly diverse ecosystem. Conditions can vary considerably between individual reefs, locations and seasons.

From our own experiences diving and snorkelling around Cairns, we know just how different one reef location can be from another.

Some sites feature beautiful shallow coral gardens, while others are known for their coral bommies, reef fish, turtles or dramatic underwater topography.

Understanding these differences is one of the reasons we believe local knowledge is so valuable when choosing a Great Barrier Reef tour.

The PADI summit provides an opportunity to celebrate these remarkable underwater environments while encouraging informed conversations about the challenges facing coral reefs and the importance of protecting them for future generations.

For readers interested in the science, the Australian Institute of Marine Science publishes ongoing research and reef monitoring information.

You Don’t Have to Be a Professional Diver to Experience the Great Barrier Reef

While the PADI AmbassaDiver Summit will bring experienced international divers to Cairns, you certainly don’t need to be an underwater photographer, professional diver or conservation specialist to enjoy the reef.

There are excellent experiences available for beginners, snorkellers and certified scuba divers.

For certified scuba divers

One of our favourite options is Silverswift Dive & Snorkel, which visits three outer Great Barrier Reef locations in a single day.

With guided diving and access to beautiful reef environments around Flynn, Milne and Pellowe Reefs, it’s an excellent choice for certified divers wanting to explore several different sites.

For divers wanting to spend several days on the reef

A Pro Dive Cairns 3-Day/2-Night Liveaboard provides the opportunity to experience up to 11 dives, including night diving.

There’s something very special about watching the sun set over the Great Barrier Reef, enjoying a night dive and waking up the following morning surrounded by the ocean.

You can also explore our broader selection of Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving trips.

For beginners interested in learning to scuba dive

Cairns is also a wonderful place to begin your diving journey.

The Pro Dive Cairns PADI Open Water Course combines dive training with time exploring the Great Barrier Reef.

If you’ve always wanted to learn to dive, earning your certification in Tropical North Queensland can be an unforgettable experience.

What Does the Summit Mean for Cairns?

The inaugural PADI AmbassaDiver Summit is more than an international gathering of scuba diving personalities.

It’s an opportunity to showcase the people, marine environments and professional dive industry that make Cairns such a special destination.

From experienced dive instructors and marine biologists to Master Reef Guides, vessel crews and conservation researchers, there are many people working across Tropical North Queensland who contribute to the visitor experience and our understanding of the Great Barrier Reef.

It’s encouraging to see these experiences and the region’s conservation work receiving international attention.

We look forward to welcoming the PADI AmbassaDivers to Cairns and following their experiences on the Great Barrier Reef later this year.
