What is a PADI learn to dive course? PADI stands for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, which is the world’s largest recreational diving membership and training organisation. Pro Dive Cairns has its own training facilities and pools in Cairns, which underwent a $2 million expansion and refurbishment in late 2011, to include 6 air-conditioned classrooms, 2 large, heated training pools and shaded break-out areas for dive students to relax.

The 4 Day e-learning course includes 1-day pool/theory and then a 3-day/2-night liveaboard (You need to complete online training in advance). The 5 Day Liveaboard Course includes 2-days swimming pool and classroom theory followed by 3-days / 2-nights aboard Pro Dive Cairns’ liveaboard boat ScubaPro.

The liveaboard portion of the course includes all chef prepared meals, accommodation, linen and free Wi-Fi while you are at sea (not the Cairns component). For more information, please see the itinerary and price tabs below.

Dive Medical Information: You will complete a dive medical questionnaire on the first day of the course and as long as you are medically fit with no asthma, not taking any prescription medication, you can swim and you are under the ages of 45 years you won’t need a dive medical and will be able to start your course. If you tick yes to any of the above mentioned medical related issues or are over the ages of 45 years you will be required to complete an Australian Standards AS 4005.1 dive medical before starting the course. This you need to arrange and pay for yourself from a dive doctor.

Itinerary:

The itinerary and start days/times for Pro Dive Cairns’ learn to dive courses vary between the 4 Day E-Learning and 5 Day Liveaboard options: specific notes on each is as follows.

  • 4-Day E-Learning 1 Day Classroom & Swimming Pool + 3-Day/2-Night Trip (Total of 4-Days).
  • 5-Day PADI Open Water Dive Course.

The 4-Day E-Learn to dive day-01 is replaced with you learning online in advance before you arrive in Cairns. Once you book you will be sent a user login so you can start your E-learning. Please note we only recommend the E-Learning if you are extremely short on time. Otherwise, we highly recommend the 5-Day Learn to dive as one on one learning with a professional dive instructor still outways convenience of learning online.

DAY 1 – CAIRNS: Your Pro Dive Cairns learn to dive course commences with a complimentary coach pick-up from Cairns city hotels, transferring you to their professional dive centre on Spence Street for an 8.30am registration. Spend the morning in the air-conditioned classroom, learning the academic side to scuba diving, including equipment, safe diving techniques and depths, pressure and decompression and dive safety signals. There is a one hour lunch break at 1pm (lunch is not included) and for those who require a dive medical, this is your chance to do so (AUD $60.50 fee payable direct to the Doctor, in addition to the course cost). At 2pm you commence pool training, where you can practise using scuba equipment and breathing under water. Your first day concludes at 5.30pm, with transfers back to your accommodation. NB: Your instructor will give you some homework to take home tonight, so be prepared for some reading and light study on dive theory and safe practices.

DAY 2 – CAIRNS: It’s a 7.30am coach pick-up time today, before getting straight into the pool at 8.30am for more confined water diving, which basically means learning to breathe underwater and staying submerged. At 12.30pm there is a quick trip to the Pro Dive retail store (in case you want to get your own mask, snorkel or other equipment). Then a one hour lunch break (lunch is not included) before you return to the dive centre at 2.00pm to complete your last classroom modules and final written exam. This evening there is an optional 2.5 hour (not included) Reef Teach marine biology presentation. This is a great way to learn more about the Great Barrier environment, ecosystem, corals and marine life, before you head to sea tomorrow.

DAY 3 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:

BUDGET: Today you start the first of your training dives on the Great Barrier Reef. The day trips are undertaken with local dive company TUSA Dive, who have Cairns’ newest reef day tour boat, complete with diving equipment and spacious dive deck. The training dives are guided by a dive master aboard TUSA. Boarding commences at Cairns’ Marlin Marina at 7.30am (coach transfers are available at additional cost) and you’ll undertake 3 of the 4 training dives needed to complete your certification today. Morning and afternoon tea, as well as a buffet lunch and all diving equipment and tuition, is included in the course cost. TUSA returns to Cairns in the afternoon around 4.30pm.

LIVEABOARD: Today is the day you head to the Outer Great Barrier Reef, to complete your training dives and become a certified diver! You will spend the next 3 days at sea, so pack your luggage. All meals, accommodation and linen is included, but you should bring at least two towels with you (one for the dive deck and one for showers at night). It’s an early start with a 5.45am coach pick-up and 6.15am check-in at the Pro Dive retail store, before boarding the Scubapro vessel for a 7am departure. Enjoy a light breakfast on board and settle in to your cabin quarters on the outward journey, you’ll be in the water before you know it. At 11.30am you enter the water for your first training dive with your professional, qualified instructor right there to assist and calm your nerves. Afterwards, it’s back to the boat for a hearty lunch and then back into the water for your second training dive: there are four to complete before you are certified. Dinner is served at 6pm and there is plenty of time afterwards to relax and unwind with dive buddies.

DAY 4 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:

BUDGET: This morning you complete your training dives and then there’s time for 2 guided, certified, pleasure dives on the Great Barrier Reef! Timing is the same as day 3: you need to be at Cairns’ Marlin Marina at 7.30am and you will be back in Cairns by 4.30pm that afternoon. Morning and afternoon tea, as well as a buffet lunch and all diving equipment and tuition are included in the course cost. This completes your 4 Day Pro Dive Cairns Learn to Dive Course.

LIVEABOARD: This morning begins with the deepest dive of your training and it’s an early start at 7am. A hearty cooked breakfast of bacon and eggs is served afterwards, as you prepare for your final training dive at 10.30am. Celebrate being a certified diver over lunch and then it’s back into the water, where you can enjoy your first, certified, pleasure dive on the Great Barrier Reef. Enjoy the freedom of exploring the Great Barrier Reef with your dive buddy sans instructor, it’s an amazing experience. Dinner is served at 6pm and afterwards there is the choice of taking a guided night dive. These are a completely different experience to diving during the day time and definitely worth taking advantage of.

DAY 5 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:

LIVEABOARD: It’s your last day of scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, so start early with a 6.30am dive. During breakfast, Pro Dive Cairns’ Scubapro boat makes its way to the last dive site of your trip. Your last dive is completed at 11am and this afternoon you return to Cairns, with complimentary transfers back to your accommodation in the city or Cairns Northern Beaches at 4pm. It is a tradition that instructors and newly qualified divers meet up for dinner that night at a local restaurant. This is not included in the price and is completely optional, but it’s a great way to wrap up the most amazing and life changing course you may ever undertake. This completes your 5 Day Pro Dive Cairns Learn to Dive Course.

Diving:

Please note: That an Australian Dive Medical Certification may be required in some cases before the start of a dive course. 5 Day Liveaboard Course participants will have the same instructor for the duration of the course.

Emil and Soren headed out with Prodive a Cairns 3 Day 2 Night Liveaboard, we managed to secure them a standby rate for the trip, the weather in Cairns on this weekend was raining and windy but Emil and Soren still reported great dive conditions on the outer reefs. Looking at their photos it looks like they had an awesome time ScubaPro. [gallery_full] Thanks guys…
