What to Expect on Your Barron River Rafting Adventure

Your rafting adventure begins with a convenient hotel pickup from Cairns, followed by a short and scenic drive into Barron Gorge National Park. Once at the river, your professional guides will kit you out with safety gear and walk you through a clear, confidence-building safety briefing. No previous rafting experience? No problem — this tour is specifically designed for beginners, first-timers, and anyone keen to try rafting without the intensity of a full-day Grade 4 trip.

Then it’s time to hit the water. You’ll spend around two hours navigating a series of fun Grade 2–3 rapids, splashing through sections like “The Drop” and “Rooster Tail,” drifting through calm rainforest pools, and soaking up panoramic views of the gorge. Between rapids your guide will share local stories about the rainforest, the river system, and the dramatic volcanic landscape of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. It’s fast, refreshing, and full of laughs — the perfect adventure to pair with your reef trip.

After the final rapid, your raft glides onto the lower riverbank where towels, dry bags and transfers are waiting. It’s an easy, fun half-day that still leaves you with plenty of time to enjoy Cairns in the afternoon or wind down before your next day of diving.

TOUR NOTES:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.

Minimum Age:

The minimum age for this tour is 12 years. Please see the full Terms & Conditions for important details regarding youth participation and safety requirements.

What’s Included:

Your half-day rafting adventure includes return hotel transfers from a downtown Cairns hotel, all professional rafting equipment, and an experienced river guide who will take care of you every step of the way. Training and safety briefings are provided on arrival, so no previous rafting experience is needed.

What to Bring:

Come ready for fun with your swimwear on under your clothes, plus a towel and dry change of clothes for afterward. We also recommend bringing your tour voucher, a water bottle, and a little cash or card if you’d like refreshments or professional photos — they make a great keepsake of an epic day on the Barron River. Please leave jewellery, passports, and irreplaceable valuables safely at your accommodation.

Don’t Forget:

You must wear secure footwear — shoes with a heel strap or enclosed toes. If you don’t want your own shoes getting soaked, hire shoes are available for around $5. Cooler days? Thermal tops and spray jackets can also be hired for a small fee.

Valuables:

As with all water-based activities, we strongly recommend leaving valuables at your hotel. Items you do need for the day — such as dry clothes, medications, wallets, or your voucher — can be safely left on the bus while you’re on the river.
