This package pairs a full day Outer Reef trip onboard Evolution, a modern high-speed catamaran, with a small-group 4WD rainforest tour to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree National Park. The tours do not need to operate on consecutive days, giving you flexibility to plan your time in Cairns.

Your Great Barrier Reef day tour travels to two exclusive outer reef locations, providing up to five hours on the reef. This is a true outer reef experience, offering clear water, healthy coral systems and excellent marine life. The large, stable twin-hull vessel ensures a comfortable journey to and from the reef, with spacious air-conditioned interiors and large open deck areas to relax between snorkelling sessions. Access to the water is easy via a rear platform, and all snorkelling equipment is included. For those wanting to go further, optional introductory and certified scuba diving is available, along with additional activities such as scenic helicopter flights and semi-submersible tours.

The day includes a freshly prepared BBQ lunch with a selection of hot and cold dishes, along with tea, coffee and light refreshments throughout the day. On the return journey to Cairns, guests can relax and enjoy a complimentary drink while taking in the views across the Coral Sea. This is a well-balanced reef day, offering a good mix of time in the water and comfort onboard the vessel.

Your Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation day tour is completed in a custom-built 4WD vehicle with smaller passenger numbers, providing a more personalised experience. Led by experienced local driver-guides, this tour focuses on delivering both an educational and enjoyable journey through one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Highlights include a Daintree River cruise where you can spot crocodiles and birdlife in their natural habitat, guided rainforest walks along elevated boardwalks, and time at Cape Tribulation where the rainforest meets the reef.

As part of the day, you will travel across the Daintree River by cable ferry and explore deeper into the rainforest, including sections of the Bloomfield Track. Lunch is included at a local rainforest setting, along with stops throughout the day to experience the region’s unique landscapes and wildlife. A visit to the Daintree Ice Cream Company is also included, offering locally made tropical fruit ice-cream to finish the day.

This package is ideal for visitors who want to experience both the reef and the rainforest properly, without having to piece together separate tours. From our experience, the combination of a modern outer reef vessel with extended reef time, together with a small-group, high-quality rainforest tour, offers a well-balanced and reliable way to see the highlights of the Cairns region.

Itinerary

This 2 Day Reef & Rainforest Package combines two full-day experiences. The tours do not need to operate on consecutive days, allowing flexibility in how you plan your time in Cairns.

Day 1: Outer Great Barrier Reef Tour

Your day begins with check-in at the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal between 7:15am – 7:45am for an 8:00am departure. Once onboard, the vessel departs Cairns and travels approximately 60–90 minutes to the Outer Great Barrier Reef.

During the journey, the crew provide safety briefings and information about the day ahead, including snorkelling and optional scuba diving activities. On arrival at the first reef location, you will have time to snorkel, dive or relax onboard while taking in the surrounding reef environment.

The tour visits two separate outer reef sites throughout the day. These locations are selected based on weather and reef conditions to ensure the best possible experience. This allows you to explore different coral formations and marine life across multiple areas of the reef.

A freshly prepared BBQ lunch is served onboard, along with tea and coffee. After lunch, you will continue to enjoy time in the water at the second reef location. Optional activities such as introductory diving, certified dives, scenic helicopter flights or semi-submersible tours can also be arranged on the day (additional cost).

In the afternoon, the vessel departs the reef and returns to Cairns, arriving at approximately 4:30pm. On the return journey, guests can relax onboard with light refreshments while enjoying the views across the Coral Sea.

Day 2: Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation

Your rainforest day begins with hotel pick-up from your Cairns, Northern Beaches or Port Douglas accommodation (pickup times confirmed at booking). You will travel north in a comfortable, air-conditioned 4WD vehicle in a smaller group setting.

The day starts with a scenic drive along the coastline before crossing the Daintree River by cable ferry. You will then join a guided Daintree River cruise, where you have the opportunity to spot crocodiles and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

Continuing into the Daintree Rainforest, your guide will take you on a walk along elevated boardwalks, explaining the unique plants, wildlife and history of this World Heritage-listed environment. You will then travel deeper into the rainforest, including sections of the Bloomfield Track, offering a more remote and authentic experience.

Lunch is provided at a local rainforest setting, followed by time at Cape Tribulation Beach, where the rainforest meets the reef. Depending on conditions, there may also be an opportunity for a freshwater swim.

On the return journey to Cairns, you will stop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company to enjoy locally made tropical fruit ice-cream. The tour concludes with drop-off back to your accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening.

Diving:

Scuba diving on the Outer Great Barrier Reef is one of the best ways to fully experience the reef, allowing you to get up close to the coral and marine life in a way that simply isn’t possible from the surface. This tour offers both introductory scuba diving for beginners and certified diving for experienced divers, making it suitable for all levels. (Optional extra cost).

If you have never dived before, you can try an Introductory Dive (also known as a Discover Scuba Dive). No previous experience is required. All training and equipment are provided on the day, with professional dive instructors guiding you every step of the way. Training begins on the trip out to the reef, where you will learn the basic skills and safety procedures before entering the water. Once at the reef, your instructor will assist you into the water and gradually introduce you to breathing underwater, before taking you on a guided dive over the reef. These dives are conducted in small groups and at shallow depths, making them a safe and controlled way to experience scuba diving for the first time.

For Certified Divers, this tour offers up to three dives at two different outer reef locations. All dives are guided by experienced dive professionals, and full equipment is included in the dive price. The reef sites are selected daily based on conditions, ensuring the best possible visibility and marine life encounters. You can expect healthy coral systems, large schools of fish, and a wide variety of reef species. The ability to dive multiple sites in one day adds variety and gives you the opportunity to explore different reef environments.

The vessel is well set up for diving, with easy water access via a rear platform and plenty of space to prepare your gear. Dive briefings are conducted before each dive, ensuring you are comfortable with the conditions and plan for the dive. Safety is always the priority, and all dives are conducted within conservative limits and guided by professional instructors.

From our experience, this is a very well-run dive day and a great option for both first-time divers wanting to try scuba diving, and certified divers looking for a relaxed, enjoyable day exploring the Outer Great Barrier Reef.

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone must be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an aeroplane.

Snorkeling:

Snorkelling on the Outer Great Barrier Reef is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to experience this incredible natural environment. You do not need any previous experience — if you can swim and are comfortable in the water, you can enjoy the reef. All equipment is provided on the day, including mask, snorkel, fins and a protective lycra suit, which also helps with sun protection while you are in the water.

This tour visits two carefully selected outer reef locations, chosen on the day based on weather and conditions to ensure the best possible visibility and reef quality. These outer reef sites are known for their clear water, vibrant coral formations and diverse marine life. You can expect to see a wide variety of tropical fish, giant clams, and if you are lucky, turtles and other reef species.

Access to the water is easy via a large rear platform, allowing you to enter and exit the ocean comfortably. The crew provide a full snorkelling briefing before you enter the water, explaining how to use the equipment and where to find the best coral and marine life. Floatation devices are available for those who want extra support, making this a suitable experience for both confident swimmers and first-time snorkellers.

You are free to snorkel at your own pace, returning to the vessel whenever you like to relax, enjoy lunch or take in the views from the deck. For those wanting a deeper understanding of the reef, optional guided snorkel tours and marine presentations are available on the day.

From our experience, snorkelling on the outer reef offers excellent value — you can see a large amount of coral and marine life from the surface without needing to scuba dive. With up to five hours spent across two reef locations, this tour provides plenty of time in the water, making it a great option for anyone wanting a genuine Great Barrier Reef experience.
