Cairns Glass Bottom Boat Tours – What You Need to Know

Glass bottom boat tours are one of the easiest ways to see the Great Barrier Reef without getting in the water. They’re included on a number of Cairns reef trips and are particularly good for families, non-swimmers, or anyone who just wants a relaxed view of the reef.

We’ve spent years on the reef and have personally experienced these tours — and the differences matter more than most people realise.

The key thing to understand is not all reef tours include them — and the quality of the experience varies quite a bit depending on where you go.

BEST FOR

Perfect for:

  • Non-swimmers or nervous swimmers
  • Families with younger kids
  • Older travellers who want a comfortable reef experience
  • Anyone wanting to see the reef without snorkelling
  • Snorkellers who want a guided overview before jumping in

If you’re a confident swimmer or diver, this is more of a bonus — not the main reason to choose a tour.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • See coral and marine life without getting wet
  • Guided commentary from marine crew or biologists
  • Typically 20–30 minute tours
  • Included on selected reef, pontoon, and island trips
  • Safe and suitable for all ages
  • Often combined with semi-submersible or underwater observatories
  • Good introduction before snorkelling

WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T REALISE (EXPERT INSIGHTS)

Not all glass bottom boat experiences are the same.

On island trips like Green Island or Fitzroy Island, you’re usually looking at fringing reef, which can be patchy depending on conditions.

Where this really stands out is on outer reef pontoons — places like Moore Reef or Reef Magic. The coral is generally healthier, and visibility tends to be better, so you actually get a proper reef view through the glass.

Also worth knowing — on some tours, it’s a quick add-on. On others, it’s a more structured, guided experience with marine commentary. That makes a big difference.

WHICH CAIRNS TOURS INCLUDE GLASS BOTTOM BOATS

Here’s a simple breakdown of the better-known options.

Outer Reef Pontoons (Best Overall Experience)

  • Reef Magic Cruises – Includes a dedicated glass-bottom boat tour with marine biologist commentary. One of the more complete reef setups.
  • Sunlover Cruises (Moore Reef Pontoon) – Good all-round option for families. Glass bottom boat, semi-sub, waterslide, and plenty to do.
  • Great Adventures (Outer Reef Platform) – Large, stable pontoon with multiple ways to see the reef does not include a Glass Bottom boat but does include a Semi-submarine even better viewing then the glass bottom boat.

These are generally the most reliable if the glass bottom boat is important to you.

Island Trips (More Relaxed, Closer to Cairns)

  • Green Island Tours – Glass bottom boat tours available or included depending on package.
  • Fitzroy Island (with Sunlover) – Usually included in packages — good for a mixed island + reef day.

These are easier days, but reef quality is not as strong as the outer reef.

Outer Reef Day Boats (Smaller Groups)

  • Ocean Freedom – Includes a glass bottom boat component alongside snorkelling and diving.

These are good if you want a smaller group experience, but the glass bottom boat is more of a bonus feature.

BEST GLASS BOTTOM BOAT TOURS FROM CAIRNS

Reef Magic Cruises (Outer Reef Pontoon)

Reef Magic is one of the more complete outer reef pontoon experiences from Cairns. It’s a strong option if the glass bottom boat is a key part of your day, with a structured, guided tour included.

Best for:

  • Non-swimmers wanting a proper reef experience
  • Families who want everything in one place
  • Anyone prioritising reef quality and comfort

Highlights:

  • Dedicated glass bottom boat tour with marine biologist
  • Outer reef location with better coral and visibility
  • Large, modern pontoon with plenty of space
  • Semi-submersible and underwater observatory also included
  • Up to 5 hours at the reef

Expert insight:
Where this one stands out is the quality of the reef viewing without getting wet. The glass bottom boat here is not just a quick loop — it’s properly guided and runs over healthier reef compared to island options.

Good to know:
Very easy, structured day. Everything is included. This one does book out in peak periods.

Sunlover Cruises (Moore Reef Pontoon)

Sunlover Cruises is one of the best all-round family reef days from Cairns. The glass bottom boat is included, but the real appeal is the variety of activities on the pontoon.

Best for:

  • Families with kids
  • Mixed groups (swimmers + non-swimmers)
  • Travellers wanting a relaxed, activity-based day

Highlights:

  • Glass bottom boat and semi-sub included
  • Waterslide and large activity platform
  • Stable pontoon — good for nervous travellers
  • Plenty to do without needing to snorkel
  • Good value for what’s included

Expert insight:
This is less about the glass bottom boat itself and more about the overall experience. If you’ve got kids or mixed abilities, this tends to work really well.

Good to know:
One of the easiest reef days to manage. Very popular in school holidays.

Great Adventures (Outer Reef Platform + Green Island Option)

Great Adventures is a solid, well-established option with a large pontoon setup. It’s also one of the few tours that lets you combine Green Island with the outer reef.

Best for:

  • Travellers wanting variety in one day
  • Cruise ship passengers
  • Those wanting a large, structured operation

Highlights:

  • Glass bottom viewing options available
  • Large, stable pontoon at the outer reef
  • Option to combine with Green Island
  • Easy logistics and consistent operation
  • Suitable for all ages

Expert insight:
The main advantage here is flexibility. If you’re trying to see both an island and the reef in one day, this is one of the few that does it well.

Good to know:
Very reliable operator. Runs daily and is easy to plan around.

Ocean Freedom (Smaller Group Experience)

Ocean Freedom is a smaller group outer reef trip with a more personal feel. It includes a glass bottom boat component, but that’s not the main focus.

Best for:

  • Couples or smaller groups
  • People wanting fewer crowds
  • Snorkellers who want a bit more guidance

Highlights:

  • Smaller group size (more relaxed atmosphere)
  • Visits multiple reef sites
  • Glass bottom boat included
  • Good snorkelling locations
  • Friendly, guided experience

Expert insight:
This one is more about reef access and smaller numbers. The glass bottom boat is a nice extra, but most people choose this for the overall experience.

Good to know:
More personal than pontoon tours. Still beginner-friendly.

WHEN A GLASS BOTTOM BOAT TOUR IS NOT THE BEST CHOICE

It’s not always the right fit.

  • If you’re a confident swimmer, snorkelling gives a much better view
  • If reef quality is your priority, avoid island-based options
  • If you want multiple reef sites, pontoon tours are limited
  • If you’re expecting a long experience, glass bottom tours are usually only 20–30 minutes

PRACTICAL REASSURANCE

  • Most glass bottom boat tours run for 20–30 minutes
  • They are included in the tour price on selected operators
  • No swimming ability required
  • Crew will guide you through what you’re seeing
  • Easy to fit into your day alongside snorkelling or relaxing

Some tours do have limited spaces per session, so you may need to book a time onboard.

FINAL THOUGHT (HOW TO CHOOSE)

If the glass bottom boat is the main reason you're going:

Choose an outer reef pontoon tour — you’ll get a much better view of the reef.

If it’s just something you’d like to try:

An island trip or smaller reef tour will still give you a look, but keep expectations realistic.
