Poseidon Dive & Snorkel – A Full Day Outer Reef Dive Review
By Clint Carroll, Cairns Dive Adventures
As a local diver who’s spent more than 15 years exploring the Great Barrier Reef, I love returning to the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs – especially on a true dive boat like Poseidon Dive & Snorkel. This is my detailed trip review from a perfect day diving Port Douglas’ outer reefs.
1. Check-In & Departure – 8:00am to 8:30am
We drove up from Cairns along the scenic coastal road – it’s about a 45–50 minute trip and honestly one of the most beautiful drives in Australia. Check-in at the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina was smooth and friendly. The boat is only a short walk from the check-in desk.
The Poseidon crew greeted us in crisp uniforms, big smiles and that reassuring professional energy that instantly tells you: you’re in good hands today.
Onboard, we completed the usual paperwork – snorkel forms, dive medical declarations and certified diver documents. Certified divers must show their cards, and the crew checked everything carefully. Morning tea was served (tea, coffee, biscuits and fruit), and once the engines started, hot drinks closed – safety first.
2. Cruise to the Outer Reef – 8:30am to 10:00am
Poseidon cruises at around 26 knots, so it takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to reach the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs – some of the clearest, most colourful reefs in the entire Marine Park.
During the trip out, the crew ran safety briefings, site overviews and dive briefings. The instructors onboard really know their reefs – that passion and local knowledge makes a huge difference when choosing where to dive each day.
3. Dive 1 – Phil’s Reef – 10:15am (45 minutes)
Our first dive of the day was Phil’s Reef on Agincourt. Like most first dives, this one is all about easing into your gear, meeting your dive guide and getting comfortable in the water.
Poseidon uses giant stride entries from the side of the vessel – a satisfying 1.5m step into the blue. We descended slowly down the mooring line, touching the bottom at around 18 metres.
Underwater, Phil’s Reef was alive:
-
Beautiful soft and hard corals
-
Giant clams
-
Parrotfish, goatfish and milkfish
-
Feather stars and swaying crinoids
-
Clouds of fusiliers
-
A curious titan triggerfish cruising past
The visibility was excellent, and it reminded me immediately why these Agincourt sites are so special – vibrant, healthy and bursting with life.
A standard 3-minute safety stop at 5 metres finished the dive, and the crew helped us straight back on board. Tanks were swapped and filled ready for Dive 2.
4. Surface Interval & Move to Site 2 – 11:00am to 12:00pm
During the 50–60 minute surface interval, Poseidon moved to the next reef site. The chef began preparing lunch, and the crew offered more guidance for upcoming dives.
5. Dive 2 – Gary’s Gut – 12:00pm (50 minutes)
We were incredibly lucky – conditions were perfect: 5–10 knots northerly, no swell, clear skies. Because of this, the skipper chose a site Poseidon rarely visits: Gary’s Gut. This site might only be accessible 1–2% of the year.
And wow – it was worth it.
The coral cover here was simply stunning.
-
Purple and pink sea fans
-
White-tip reef sharks gliding along the slope
-
Parrotfish and goatfish schooling
-
Red bass and fusiliers
-
Large plate corals and bommies
-
Giant clams glowing electric blue
Gary’s Gut sits beside a deep outer reef wall dropping to 40m, giving you that exhilarating “edge of the world” feeling. One of the most pristine Agincourt sites I’ve seen in years.
After another 3-minute safety stop, we climbed aboard to the smell of lunch.
6. Lunch & Transit to Site 3 – 12:45pm to 1:45pm
Lunch onboard is excellent – prawns, beef, chicken, salads, cold dishes, hot dishes, soup, fresh bread – a proper spread for hungry divers.
Plenty of time to relax, chat, hydrate and get ready for the final dive.
7. Dive 3 – Drift Dive to Turtle Bay – 2:00pm (45 minutes)
Our third dive was a drift dive, and this is where Poseidon shows its true dive-boat pedigree.
The skipper lined us up along the outer wall, the boat maintained slow forward motion, and one by one we performed a giant stride into the blue while the boat was still moving. Once everyone was in, we grouped up and descended together.
Drift dives out here feel like flying.
A gentle current carried us along a magnificent 30m wall decorated with:
-
White-tip and black-tip reef sharks
-
Pelagic schooling fish
-
Glittering fusiliers
-
Sea fans
-
Boulder corals and stag-horn forests
The dive naturally finished in Turtle Bay, a shallow coral garden around 12–15m. Here we saw:
-
A beautiful green turtle
-
Giant clams
-
Anemonefish tucked into waving anemones
-
Coral trout
-
Sweetlip
-
Spangled emperors
-
Red bass
-
Rays cruising the flats
A perfect way to end the dive day.
8. Return to Port Douglas – 2:45pm to 4:30pm
After packing up gear, filling out logbooks and relaxing on the sundeck, we began the cruise back to Port Douglas. We arrived around 4:15pm–4:30pm, sunburnt, salty and grinning ear to ear.
9. Final Thoughts – 10/10 Outer Reef Experience
Poseidon is one of the best day dive boats operating out of Port Douglas.
Here’s why:
-
Huge dive deck with plenty of space
-
Fast travel time to the outer reef
-
Guided diving with passionate, knowledgeable instructors
-
World-class drift dives
-
Access to 35+ incredible Agincourt reef sites
-
A proper diver’s boat (big tanks, flexible entries, tender use)
If you’re a certified or advanced diver who wants clear water, healthy coral systems, and a genuine outer reef dive experience, this trip is outstanding. Snorkellers will also love the shallow coral gardens, sheltered bommies and abundant marine life.
For me, it’s a solid 10/10.
We’ll absolutely be back.
Conclusion:
After a full day out on Poseidon, it’s easy to see why this vessel has such a strong reputation among divers. The combination of fast access to the outer reef, genuinely passionate crew, pristine Agincourt sites and the chance to experience everything from gentle coral gardens to exhilarating drift dives makes this one of Port Douglas’ standout reef experiences. Every dive delivered something different — sharks cruising the wall, electric-blue giant clams, delicate sea fans, schooling trevally and endless coral colours — reminding me once again why the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs are some of the most beautiful in the entire Marine Park.
Whether you’re a confident snorkeller or a certified diver chasing world-class reef action, Poseidon delivers a true Great Barrier Reef adventure. A flawless day on a proper dive boat — and one I’ll happily return to again and again. if you have any questions about this tour get in touch with us – PH: +61 7 40411638 or by Email: reservations@cairnsdiveadventures.com
