Cairns Dive Adventures Becomes First Australian Tour Operator to Launch AI-Powered Matchmaker

Cairns Diving News | Feb 22nd, 2026

Cairns, Queensland, Australia – While major travel booking platforms continue to rely on basic search filters, a Cairns-based dive company has quietly launched what appears to be Australia’s first AI-native tour recommendation engine for Great Barrier Reef experiences.

Clint Carroll, of Cairns Dive Adventures, unveils Australia’s first AI-powered reef tour recommendation system – combining 758 dives of expertise with cutting-edge technology to help visitors find their perfect Great Barrier Reef experience in under 2 minutes.

The Problem: Too Many Great Choices

Visitors planning a Great Barrier Reef trip face a daunting decision: with over 50 tour operators and hundreds of daily departures, choosing the right experience can take hours of research—often leading to decision paralysis or booking the wrong tour.

“We saw customers spending 2-3 hours comparing tours online, only to call us confused,” says Clint Carroll, Manager at Cairns Dive Adventures. “Some would book based purely on price, then discover it wasn’t right for their experience level. Others would give up entirely.”

The Solution: 758 Dives of AI-Powered Expertise

The company’s response? Build an AI matchmaker trained on 758 real dives across Cairns’ reef systems.

Launched February 2026, the “Reef Tour Matchmaker” uses Claude Sonnet 4—one of the world’s most advanced AI language models—to deliver personalized tour recommendations in under 2 minutes.

The system asks five simple questions about diving experience, budget, available time, and priorities, then matches users with their ideal tour from 50+ options, complete with expert explanations of why each recommendation fits.

More Than Just a Chatbot

Unlike generic travel chatbots, the Matchmaker was purpose-built for Cairns & Port Douglas reef tours, incorporating:

  • Detailed knowledge of 50+ tour operators and their unique characteristics
  • Understanding of reef systems (Norman, Saxon, Hastings, Flynn, Milne, Pellowe, Agincourt, Ribbon Reefs)
  • Insider tips from 758 dives of combined team experience
  • Seasonal considerations (visibility, weather, marine life)
  • Experience-level matching (from never-dived-before to 100+ dives)

“This isn’t AI replacing humans,” Clint Carroll explains. “It’s AI making expert knowledge accessible to everyone, instantly. If someone still has questions, they click a button and our dive experts personally review their results and offer even more personalised information.”

A First for Australian Tourism?

While international travel giants have experimented with AI chatbots, industry observers suggest Cairns Dive Adventures may be the first Australian tour operator to deploy a fully functional, AI-native recommendation engine tailored specifically to their product line.

What Makes It Work

The secret, according to Clint Carroll, is combining AI’s speed with genuine expertise:

“We didn’t just feed generic tour descriptions to the AI. We built comprehensive ‘expert insights’ for each tour—honest assessments of who each tour is perfect for, insider tips, and gotchas to watch out for. The AI uses that to match people accurately.”

“We are still fine-tuning the system, but it has been amazing how accurate the recommendation engine listens to the users request, thinks about the perfect tour and suggests it based on the user input”

The system also handles edge cases the old filter-based systems couldn’t: travelers prone to seasickness, elderly parents who don’t swim, underwater photographers needing unguided time, or budget-conscious backpackers who still want quality diving.

The Future of Travel Booking?

Whether this represents the future of travel booking or remains a niche innovation, one thing is clear: small Australian operators are no longer waiting for corporate travel sites to innovate.

“We’re a family-run business competing against international platforms with billion-dollar budgets,” says Clint Carroll. “But we have something they don’t: 758 dives of real experience and the willingness to try new technology to help our customers.”
