Cairns Dive Centre has been teaching people to scuba dive in Cairns for over 35 years. Locally owned and operated, Cairns Dive Centre has two PADI Open Water Learn to Dive Course options. (please see the prices tab below), allowing you to tailor your course to suit your itinerary and budget.

What is a PADI open water course? The PADI Open Water Course is an internationally recognized certification which will allow you to scuba dive anywhere in the world, within the limits of your license (see the Diving Info tab below).  It takes 4 days to complete our Open Water Dive Course.

Cairns Dive Centre has its own training facilities and pool in Cairns, as well as a second Dive Centre on Fitzroy Island. They also have a day boat, providing day tours to the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns Dive Centre has two Open Water Dive Course options:  Each of the Open Water Courses includes a minimum of two (2) days learning theory and practicing basic scuba skills in their Cairns classroom and pool, Day 3 training dives are completed on tropical Fitzroy Island and Day 4 the last training dives are completed on the spectacular Outer Great Barrier Reef, and upon successful completion you will become a PADI certified diver.

The second option is INCLUDING one night in four share accommodation in a Butterfly Bungalow at Fitzroy Island Resort, plus one extra training dive, therefore allowing the student to enjoy one certified dive on the Great Barrier Reef once they have completed their course:

Please Note: PADI Open Water Dive courses only start Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

NOTE: An Australian dive medical (AS 4005.1) may be required to be completed prior to/in conjunction with this course. This is an additional cost and can be undertaken on the first day of the course or before at several Cairns doctors / medical clinics.

Please keep in mind the Open Water Dive student will need to answer medical questions and will need to pass a swim test. The test is a 200m swim (can use any stroke and at their own pace). A person can not dive if they have Asthma, Epilepsy, Diabetes, have had or have any major heart, lung or ear problems, be taking certain medication (including some anti-depressants) or if they are pregnant.

Please Note: PADI Open Water Dive courses only start Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Diving:

The minimum age to learn to scuba dive is 12 years old. There are some basic swimming requirements, which you will need to demonstrate during the course. You must be able to swim at least 200m and float for at least 10 minutes. This is for your own safety.

Please note: You may be required to complete an Australian Dive Medical Certification prior to the start of a dive course. Please note that some medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes and heart conditions) will preclude you from learning to dive. For more information, please visit the Dive Medical page.

The PADI Open Water Diver course is internationally recognized and will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need, to dive anywhere in the world to a maximum depth of 18m, when diving with a buddy. All instruction manuals are included in the course cost. At completion, you are not certified for solo diving or deep diving.

You will spend two days in Cairns, learning the core skills needed to scuba dive safely with PADI Diver Instructors. If you are nervous in the water, make sure you let them know, as the instructors are only too happy to spend extra time with you, making you completely at ease before you head out to the open waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

The theory elements are completed in air-conditioned classrooms and include a PADI DVD presentation. Basic scuba skills are practiced in the 4m deep heated pool, providing a controlled, safe environment for nervous first-time scuba divers. Once this is completed, you will complete four (4) training dives, with your instructor, on the Great Barrier Reef.

The number of scuba dives you will complete depends on which course you choose.

Snorkeling:

This is a learn to dive course. You will have time in between dives to go snorkeling. But please note the main purpose of this course is to learn to Scuba Dive and get your PADI Open Water Dive License.

TOUR NOTES:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.

Remember to learn to dive you must be able to swim, you must be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication.
