“Big Cat” is a 35m catamaran with spacious air-conditioned interior and exterior sun decks, with comfortable seating on all levels. Travel time to and from Green Island is about one hour each way. Committed to environmental excellence, Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises has Advanced Ecotourism accreditation and Ecotourism Australia has named them a Climate Action leader.

Green Island is the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef to boast rainforest vegetation. Big Cat guests can explore the rainforest on sheltered boardwalks with interpretive signage. You can also relax on the sandy beaches, some of which are patrolled by surf life savers, go snorkelling under the pier, or grab a drink at the licensed resort bar.

Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises allows you to tailor your day to suit your itinerary and budget, with a range of packages available (details outlined in the rates table). All tours include activity and snorkelling demonstrations onboard the boat, a choice of snorkelling equipment or glass bottom boat tour, coach transfers, fish feeding and tea and coffee in the morning. You may choose to ‘add on’ to your day tour by paying extra to include a buffet lunch (served onboard the boat at Green Island), a semi-submersible tour and/or the snorkelling equipment / glass bottom boat tour (whichever you choose to leave out of the standard tour price). See prices tab below for more information.

Itinerary:

The Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises day tour commences with check-in at Cairns’ Reef Fleet Terminal at 8.30am. From there, it’s a short walk to the Big Cat catamaran, moored at the Marlin Marina, with boarding in time for a 9am departure. Complimentary tea and coffee is served on arrival. Pre-recorded introductory and safety messages are played in English, Chinese and Japanese as Big Cat pulls out of the marina and begins its one hour transfer to Green Island. The onboard screens also show snorkelling demonstration videos and provide an introduction to the Great Barrier Reef environment, during your transit time.

Snorkelling equipment is issued from the middle deck. On arrival at Green Island, Big Cat moors at the jetty, allowing guests the opportunity to come and go from the boat throughout the day. Snorkelling can be done directly from Green Island’s beaches, while other pre-booked activities, including glass bottom boat tours and semi-submersible tours, are conducted throughout the day from the boat itself. Times are advised on notice boards. If you have upgraded to include the buffet lunch in your price, then this is served onboard the boat. Guests should be back on the boat by around 3.30pm for a final head count, before Big Cat makes its return trip to Cairns, arriving around 5pm.

Diving:

Big Cat Green Island Cruises do not offer scuba diving. Green Island is a wonderful island beach day but not the best place to do scuba diving. If you would like to scuba dive then it is recommended to choose one of the outer reef day boats that travel much further offshore past Green Island.

Snorkeling:

Green Island snorkelling is conducted directly from the island’s sandy beaches and is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. You can choose to include snorkelling equipment in your standard tour price (at no extra charge) or book it as an added extra (if you want to include a glass bottom boat tour in your half day tour price: for more details, see the prices tab). Flotation vests and lycra suits are good for prevention against jellyfish and can be hired from Big Cat: this is charged in addition to the standard ticket price. Snorkelling instruction is provided via the onboard video presentation. Equipment is available in adult and child sizes. The best Green Island snorkelling is at the jetty, where your boat is moored.

TOUR NOTES:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.
