Beginner Divers (8–20 dives): The Best Liveaboards for You

If you’re new to diving or recently certified, Cairns offers some of the most accessible and comfortable liveaboards in Australia. These trips normally visit:

• Norman Reef
• Saxon Reef
• Hastings Reef

All three are 45–55 km offshore and deliver easy conditions, excellent visibility, protected moorings, and a relaxed diving environment.

Why beginners love Cairns liveaboards:

  • Comfortable boats and private cabins
  • Optional guided dives available on many vessels
  • Easy navigation and excellent briefings
  • Great for couples where one snorkels and one dives
  • Beautiful coral gardens, shallow lagoons and safe conditions

Recommended trip length:
3 days / 2 nights — the ideal introduction to liveaboard diving.

Intermediate Divers (50–100 dives): Flynn, Milln & Pellowe Reefs

If you’ve built confidence underwater and want more adventure, the Outer Reefs south of Cairns offer spectacular diving. These include:

• Flynn Reef
• Milln Reef
• Pellowe Reef

These reefs are further offshore (65 km+), with deeper walls, larger bommies and more varied topography.

What to expect:

  • Unguided diving only — you must navigate independently
  • Fantastic macro life, turtles, sharks and large schools
  • Slightly more movement at sea (single-hull vessels)
  • Perfect for divers comfortable exploring without a guide

If you’re a solo diver, boats will buddy you with another certified diver.

Advanced Divers: Ribbon Reefs, Cod Hole & Osprey Reef Expeditions

For divers who have travelled the world — Red Sea, Maldives, PNG, Indonesia — Cairns offers world-class expeditions.

Ribbon Reef Expeditions (4 Days / 3 Nights)

  • Depart Cairns – sail north to Lizard Island

  • Depart Lizard Island – dive the Ribbon Reefs
  • Cross east to Osprey Reef, a remote atoll rising 1000 m from the seafloor

Requires:
– Advanced certification
– Good buoyancy control
– Previous experience in currents

Far Northern Expeditions (7 Days)

  • Combination of deep walls, macro, sharks & remote reef systems
  • For experienced divers only — no snorkeller suitability
