Want to learn to dive on the Great Barrier Reef and spend a couple of nights out on the water? This Pro Dive Cairns 4-Day PADI eLearning Course brings both experiences together. Complete the theory at home, spend your first day in Cairns learning practical skills in the pool, then head to the Outer Great Barrier Reef for a 3-day/2-night liveaboard adventure.

The online study is completed before your four-day course begins. This makes the course a good option if you are comfortable learning independently and would like to fit your dive training and liveaboard into four days of your Cairns holiday.

Your practical training takes place at Pro Dive Cairns’ PADI Five Star Dive and Career Development Centre. With two heated training pools and professional PADI instructors, you can get familiar with your equipment, practise breathing underwater and start building the skills you will use on the reef. If you are feeling nervous, let your instructor know and ask plenty of questions along the way.

Then it’s time to pack your bag and head out to sea! You will spend the next three days aboard one of Pro Dive Cairns’ Scubapro liveaboard boats, with your accommodation, dive equipment and freshly prepared meals taken care of. Between dives, there is time to relax on deck, get to know your fellow passengers and enjoy being surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef.

The trip includes up to nine dives. Your first four ocean dives are training dives with your PADI instructor. Once you have successfully completed all course requirements, you can enjoy five recreational dives, including an instructor-guided night dive. It is a wonderful opportunity to put your new skills into practice and experience the reef at different times of day.

Pro Dive Cairns visits Outer Reef sites across Flynn, Thetford, Milln and Pellowe Reefs. Colourful reef fish, coral gardens and giant clams are part of the attraction, with the chance of seeing turtles, reef sharks and rays along the way. Sites are selected to suit conditions, and marine life sightings vary from trip to trip.

Successful completion earns you a PADI Open Water Diver certification, recognised internationally. It opens the door to future diving holidays, with diving always within the limits of your certification, training and experience. Younger students receive a Junior Open Water Diver certification with age-related restrictions.

At Cairns Dive Adventures, we can help you work out whether this course suits your travel plans and preferred way of learning. If you would rather learn the theory in a classroom with an instructor, have a look at the Pro Dive Cairns 5-Day PADI Open Water Course.

Important: Complete Your eLearning Before Arrival

After booking, you will receive instructions for accessing your PADI eLearning. Complete all required modules and quizzes before arriving for Day 1 in Cairns. Allow enough time to work through the material properly before travelling.

The advertised four days cover your practical training and liveaboard; your online study is additional time completed beforehand.

Dive Medical Information

All students must complete Pro Dive Cairns’ student medical declaration before starting the course. Review the diver medical questionnaire (PDF, opens in a new tab) before booking so you have time to arrange any required assessment.

If your answers indicate that medical clearance is required, you must obtain a dive medical certificate before training begins, preferably from a doctor experienced in diving medicine. Pro Dive Cairns requires this medical to be completed within the 90 days before your course starts.

Any required medical assessment is arranged and paid for separately. A medical condition does not automatically rule out diving; clearance depends on the appropriate medical assessment.

Itinerary:

Before you arrive — PADI eLearning

Start your course from home by completing the required online theory and quizzes. Arrive in Cairns ready for practical training, with your medical clearance organised if required. You will need to arrange your own Cairns accommodation before the course and for the night after Day 1.

Day 1 — Cairns pool training

Check in at Pro Dive Cairns’ training centre at 116 Spence Street at 8.30am. Complimentary Cairns city accommodation pickups generally begin around 8.00am, with your exact time confirmed for your location.

Today is about putting your online learning into practice. With your PADI instructor, you will learn to use your scuba equipment and practise the underwater skills needed before progressing to the reef. The heated pools provide a place to become familiar with breathing underwater, moving around in your gear and communicating with your dive buddy.

There is a lunch break during the day; lunch is at your own expense. Training continues in the afternoon, with return transfers scheduled around 5.00pm. Tonight you stay in your own Cairns accommodation, ready for an early start tomorrow.

Day 2 — Your first Great Barrier Reef training dives

Today you head out to the Outer Great Barrier Reef! Cairns city pickups generally begin around 6.00am, with check-in at the Pro Dive Cairns retail shop on the corner of Shields and Grafton Streets at 6.20am. Your Scubapro liveaboard departs Cairns at approximately 7.00am.

Enjoy a light breakfast on board as you make your way to the reef. You will complete your first two ocean training dives with your instructor, bringing together the skills you practised in the pool. Between dives, head back on board for lunch and some time to relax.

There may also be an opportunity to snorkel in the afternoon. After dinner, settle into your first night on the reef. Your own guided night dive is scheduled for tomorrow, after successful completion of your certification requirements.

Day 3 — Complete your training and enjoy a night dive

Wake up on the Great Barrier Reef and get ready for your remaining two training dives. Once you have successfully completed all required theory, water skills and training dives, you will qualify as a PADI Open Water Diver.

After lunch, enjoy your first recreational dive as a newly certified diver. This is your chance to start putting those new skills to use while exploring with your dive buddy.

After dinner, join your instructor for a guided night dive. Exploring by torchlight gives you a different view of the reef, with the chance to see marine life that is more active after dark. Then it’s back on board for your second night at sea.

Day 4 — Three more dives and return to Cairns

Make the most of your final morning with up to three recreational dives, beginning with an early dive as the reef wakes up. There is time for breakfast and more reef exploring before your final dive, normally completed by midday.

Enjoy lunch on board as the boat prepares to return to Cairns. Return transfers are scheduled for approximately 4.00pm. An optional farewell dinner with fellow passengers and crew may be arranged that evening, at your own expense.

This completes your four-day course, with up to four training dives and five recreational dives across the liveaboard trip.

Please note: This is a guide itinerary. Times, dive sites and dive opportunities may change with weather, sea conditions and training progress. Certification requires successful completion of all course requirements.

Diving Info:

Who is this course suitable for?

This is a beginner scuba diving course; you do not need an existing dive certification. It suits travellers who are comfortable studying online, can complete the theory before arriving and are ready for a full day of practical training followed by three days at sea.

If you prefer classroom learning or would like to discuss any concerns about the water, speak with our team before choosing your course. The five-day option includes two days at the training centre and may better suit your preferred learning style.

Swimming requirements

You must be able to swim 200 metres without swimming aids, or swim 300 metres using a mask, snorkel and fins, and float or tread water without aids for 10 minutes. You should be comfortable in the water before starting the course.

Certification and age requirements

On successful completion, students aged 15 and over receive the PADI Open Water Diver certification, with a maximum recommended depth of 18 metres and diving within their training and experience.

PADI Junior Open Water training can begin from age 10. Please contact us before booking a child so we can confirm suitability and arrangements with Pro Dive Cairns. After certification, divers aged 10–11 are limited to 12 metres and must dive with a PADI professional or certified parent or guardian. Divers aged 12–14 are limited to 18 metres and must dive with a certified adult.

Equipment and included dives

All required dive and snorkel equipment is supplied. The liveaboard includes up to nine dives: four instructor-led training dives, followed by five recreational dives after successful certification. One of the recreational dives is an instructor-guided night dive. The number of dives completed depends on conditions, training progress and your participation.

PADI learning materials, certification on successful completion and a dive logbook are included.

Accommodation and meals

The liveaboard includes two nights in an air-conditioned twin-share bunk cabin or double-share cabin, subject to availability. Double cabins are limited (First come first served basis) and should be requested when booking. Bathrooms are shared. Bedding is supplied; please bring your own towels.

Freshly prepared meals, tea, coffee and drinking water are included during the boat trip. Let us know about dietary requirements before booking so we can check what the crew can cater for.

Accommodation in Cairns and meals during the land-based part of the course are at your own expense. Northern Beaches transfers, any required dive medical, onboard purchases and the optional farewell dinner also cost extra.

Flying after diving

Allow at least 24 hours between your final dive and flying. With the final dive normally finished by midday on Day 4, plan flights for midday or later the following day, subject to your actual last-dive time and the crew’s advice.

What to bring

  • Passport or Australian driver’s licence, booking confirmation and any required medical clearance.
  • Swimwear, a towel and money for lunch on your pool training day.
  • Comfortable clothing, swimwear and something warm for evenings on the boat.
  • Two towels for the liveaboard: one for swimming and one for showers.
  • Sun hat, sunscreen, toiletries and a refillable water bottle.

Pack a small bag for the boat. Excess luggage can be stored at Pro Dive Cairns’ retail shop during your liveaboard.

Cancellations and eLearning

The eLearning component is non-refundable. Please read the cancellation conditions provided with your booking, including Cairns Dive Adventures’ booking terms and the operator’s course conditions. Contact us before booking if you need clarification about cancellation or what happens if you cannot complete the course.

Snorkeling Info:

There may be opportunities to snorkel during your liveaboard, depending on the training schedule and conditions. Snorkel equipment is included, and spending time at the surface offers another way to enjoy the reef between dives.

If you are travelling with someone who would like to snorkel while you learn to dive, contact Cairns Dive Adventures. We can check availability and pricing for them to join the liveaboard as a snorkelling passenger. Their booking is separate from your learn-to-dive course.

TOUR NOTES:

To Try Any Form of Diving

To try any form of scuba diving, everyone must be medically fit, with no asthma and not taking any prescription medication that may affect their ability to dive. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying. Some tour operators have a no-refund policy for dives not completed for any reason.

Please note that freediving is not permitted on Cairns or Port Douglas day boats or liveaboard dive vessels. Due to the risk of shallow water blackout, operators do not allow freediving for safety reasons.

We highly recommend that all passengers take out comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do You Have Medical Issues?

If you have any medical issues, you will need to see your local GP before travelling and ask them to provide a signed and dated letter on practice letterhead stating that you are “fit to dive”.

If you have one of these letters, Cairns dive operators can usually accept you for diving, subject to their own safety procedures. Please note that these letters are generally valid for three months from the date of issue.

Learn to Dive Courses & Advanced Dive Training

For learn-to-dive courses and advanced dive education courses in Australia, dive medical requirements are strict. Dive medicals are only valid for 90 days from the date of issue.

Australia has very high safety standards for dive training and dive operators. If you have any medical history, current condition, or medication use that may affect your ability to dive, please arrange medical clearance before booking or travelling.
