Great Adventures offers a fantastic Great Barrier Reef pontoon trip from Cairns. This day tour departs Cairns at 10:30 am to give you a leisurely check-in time of 9:45 am at the Reef Fleet Terminal. This tour provides guests with up to three (3) hours to swim, snorkel and enjoy the large semi-submarine, you can also book scuba diving and scuba dooing (for more information on these activities, please see the below tabs). The boat returns you to Cairns at 5:30 pm.

A fast, comfortable catamaran collects you in Cairns and after a quick stop at Green Island (where you can’t get off the boat), you continue on to Great Adventures’ permanently moored pontoon on the Outer Great Barrier Reef. (Located 45km offshore from Cairns) The boat has two levels of air-conditioned interior and two exterior decks, one shaded and one not.

The outer reef pontoon has plenty of shaded seating and an elevated sundeck for those wanting to relax in the sunshine. It also has an in-water snorkel platform, large underwater observatory for watching divers, hot & cold showers, toilets and change rooms, for maximum passenger comfort.

Inclusions in the day tour: tea and coffee onboarding, morning tea, informative marine biology reef presentation, hot cooked buffet lunch, all snorkelling equipment (mask, fins, snorkel & lycra suit supplied). The trip also includes guided tours on the semi-submersible, this is one of the largest semi-submarines located on the Great Barrier Reef. Enjoy large clear windows and a 360-degree view of the underwater world.

Semi-Submarines are fantastic for those that do not wish to swim of perhaps have young children. They depart the pontoon every 45 minutes throughout the day. Ride them as many times as you like. Explore the deep outer reef walls and shallow coral gardens.

Optional extras are also available such as scenic helicopter rides, helmet scubadoo diving and regular scuba diving. See the tabs below for more detailed information on these activities.

Itinerary:

The Great Adventures Outer Great Barrier Reef day tour commences with check-in at the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal from 9.30am. The desk is just a five minute walk from the spacious catamaran, which is moored in the nearby Marlin Marina. Boarding is from 10.10am with complimentary tea and coffee served on arrival. The boat departs Cairns at 10.30am and after a quick stop at Green Island, to collect more passengers (you will not be allowed off the boat), you continue on to the Outer Great Barrier Reef.

Arriving at the reef pontoon around 12.30pm, you can get straight into your water activities. Snorkelling is included and you can collect your mask, fins and snorkel from the pontoon. Semi-submersible tours run throughout the day (times advised on a notice board) and you can visit the underwater observatory whenever you like.

The hot and cold buffet lunch is served on the pontoon between 1-2.30pm and includes beef, chicken and seafood dishes, cold meats, salads and breads: there is also a vegetarian option. Meals can be eaten either on the sun deck, or shaded tables. You have until around 3.10pm to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef before a blast will call you back to the catamaran for a final headcount and departure. You will arrive back into Cairns around 5.30pm.

Diving:

Divers can choose between one (1) or two (2) scuba dives on this trip, both of which are taken from the Great Adventures Great Barrier Reef pontoon. All diving is guided and all equipment and briefings are included in the dive price. There is certified diving for qualified divers and introductory diving, for those wanting to try the activity for the first time (no experience necessary).

INTRODUCTORY DIVES: No experience necessary and a great opportunity to try scuba diving for the first time on the Great Barrier Reef. All introductory dives are guided and are only completed once you have received training and practised your skills. Water entry is via lowered steps and all equipment is included in the introductory dive price.

CERTIFIED DIVING: All of the certified diving on this Great Adventures tour is guided. You can choose between one (1) or two (2) scuba dives, both of which are completed from the pontoon. The dives are relatively shallow, due to the pontoon’s location, reaching a maximum depth of 14m. Certified dives are around 40-minutes each and are completed before and after lunch. There is an abundance of marine life around the pontoon, including Anemonefish, Maori Wrasse, Nudibranchs, Parrotfish and more. Briefings are provided on the boat, as is explanation on the dive equipment, which is all included in the certified diving price. Water entry is very comfortable, completed on steps under the pontoon straight into the water. You will be required to show your dive license and complete dive medical paperwork on board.

Snorkeling:

Snorkelling from the Great Adventures pontoon is excellent. The coral gardens of the Great Barrier Reef are just a few short metres from the pontoon and the shallow waters make it easy to see and enjoy the colours and marine life. Mask, snorkel and fins are all included in the ticket price, as are flotation devices if required. Lycra / wet suits are available for hire from the pontoon (additional cost). Water entry is via a submerged platform, making it easy to put on and take off your fins.

Norman Reef Pontoon

Great Adventures: Green Island + Reef Review

Great Adventures is the only tour operator to combine Green Island with the Outer Great Barrier Reef. The boat carries hundreds of guests, so you can expect the pontoon and boat to be quite busy. There is ample time to explore Green Island and then enjoy the Outer Great Barrier Reef, with the pontoon activities...

TOUR NOTES:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.

Inclusions: Return luxury air-conditioned fast catamaran to Outer Reef, Morning and afternoon tea & coffee, Hot & cold buffet lunch, Coral viewing from the semi-submersible vessel, Snorkelling equipment, Use of buoyancy vests, Underwater observatory, Reef education presentation
