“Big Cat” is a comfortable 35-metre catamaran featuring air-conditioned indoor areas, spacious sundecks, and plenty of seating across multiple levels. Travel time to and from Green Island is approximately one hour each way. The operator holds Advanced Ecotourism Accreditation and is recognised by Ecotourism Australia as a Climate Action Leader, showcasing a commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

Green Island is the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with its own rainforest ecosystem. Guests can explore this lush environment via shaded boardwalks with informative signage, or simply unwind on the sandy beaches, some of which are patrolled by lifeguards. Snorkelling directly off the beach under the island’s jetty is a popular option for those wishing to see coral and marine life.

Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises offers flexibility to suit different preferences and budgets. All tours include tea and coffee in the morning, fish feeding, and activity briefings onboard. Optional extras—such as snorkelling equipment, glass bottom boat tours, a buffet lunch, and semi-submersible tours—can be added during the booking process. Please refer to the booking form and pricing table for more details on available packages and upgrades.

Itinerary:

The Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises day tour commences with check-in at Cairns’ Reef Fleet Terminal at 8.30am. From there, it’s a short walk to the Big Cat catamaran, moored at the Marlin Marina, with boarding in time for a 9am departure. Complimentary tea and coffee is served on arrival. Pre-recorded introductory and safety messages are played in English, Chinese and Japanese as Big Cat pulls out of the marina and begins its one hour transfer to Green Island. The onboard screens also show snorkelling demonstration videos and provide an introduction to the Great Barrier Reef environment, during your transit time.

Snorkelling equipment is issued from the middle deck (Optional Extra Cost). On arrival at Green Island, Big Cat moors at the jetty, allowing guests the opportunity to come and go from the boat throughout the day. Snorkelling can be done directly from Green Island’s beaches, while other pre-booked activities, like glass bottom boat tours and semi-submersible tours, are conducted throughout the day from the boat itself. Times are advised on notice boards. If you have upgraded to include the buffet lunch in your price, then this is served onboard the boat. Guests should be back on the boat by around 3.30pm for a final head count, before Big Cat makes its return trip to Cairns, arriving around 5pm.

Diving:

Big Cat Green Island Cruises do not offer scuba diving. Green Island is a wonderful island beach day but not the best place to do scuba diving. If you would like to scuba dive then it is recommended to choose one of the outer reef day boats that travel much further offshore past Green Island.

Snorkeling:

Green Island snorkelling is conducted directly from the island’s sandy beaches and is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. You can choose to book it as an added extra. Flotation vests and lycra suits are good for prevention against jellyfish and can be hired from Big Cat: this is charged in addition to the standard ticket price. Snorkelling instruction is provided via the onboard video presentation. Equipment is available in adult and child sizes. The best Green Island snorkelling is at the jetty, where your boat is moored.

TOUR NOTES:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.
