Itinerary:

The itinerary for both days of your Open Water Referral Course are pretty much the same, as you are taking 2 day tours aboard Deep Sea Divers Den’s Sea Quest boat. Sea Quest can visit up to 16 different reef sites, usually 2 per day, with a maximum of 3 dives per day. The order in which you complete / undertake your 4 training dives will be at the discretion of your Dive Instructor. This will be discussed with you on day 1. A basic, daily itinerary for Sea Quest Open Water Referral Course is as follows.

This course gives you the 4 training dives.

If there is time and you pass everything correctly, there is the chance to do one (1) pleasure dive on the last day after lunch. But this is at the discretion of your dive instructor on the day and only if there is time available.

Please note: On day 1, you will need to bring your ‘referral’ paperwork with you, showing evidence that you have successfully completed your pool/theory training. This should be issued and signed by the Dive Instructor, who completed the training. If you were required to complete a dive medical, you will also need to bring this with you. You will need two passport sized photos, for your dive certification card.

Your Open Water Referral Course starts with a bus pick up at a Cairns hotel or Backpacker Hostel around – 7:30 am. Sea Quest has a scheduled departure time of 8:30 am. Complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits are served on arrival and detailed (trip, itinerary and safety) briefings are provided by the crew, on the way to the reef.

During the 90-minute transfer time from Cairns to the Great Barrier Reef, you will sit with your Dive Instructor to review your training documentation and knowledge. They will provide any refresher required and a thorough overview of the scuba diving equipment and information on the training dives.

You arrive at the first reef site around 9.30am and it’s pretty much straight into the water for your first dive. The second dive of the day is generally around 11.15am, with a buffet lunch served from 12:00 pm. During lunch, Sea Quest moves to its second reef location. The third and final dive is usually around 2:00 pm and Sea Quest departs the reef at 3:00 pm, arriving back into Cairns at 4.30 pm.

Day 2 will be pretty much the same, except today you will complete your training and become a certified PADI Open Water scuba diver!

Diving:

Please note: Anyone wanting to learn to scuba dive in Cairns must first pass an Australian Dive Medical Certification Questionaire. Please note that some medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes and heart conditions) will preclude you from learning to dive. For more information, please visit the Dive Medical page.

This Open Water Referral Course is suitable for those people who have already successfully passed the pool and theory training and have the relevant paperwork demonstrating this, signed by your Dive Instructor. This course can be used to complete the PADI Open Water Course and all final course/administration costs are covered in the price.

Once you have successfully completed the four (4) training dives, you may have time for one (1) pleasure dive. At the end of day 2 – assuming all has gone well – you will be a certified PADI Open Water scuba diver. This means you will have all of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need, to dive anywhere in the world to a maximum depth of 18metres, when diving with a buddy. At completion, you are not certified for solo diving or deep diving.

Snorkeling:

You can snorkel after your training dives if there is enough time. All snorkel gear is provided on board the boat.

TOUR NOTES:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.

Inclusions: Dive Certification Costs, Fresh & healthy buffet style lunch, Morning tea & self-serve tea and coffee, Quality diving equipment & wetsuits, Reef interpretation presentation.

Referral Course Requirments: Remember you must have already completed your classroom and swimming pool training to join this referral course. You will need to show a copy of your referral paperwork signed and dated by your instructor.
