Deep Sea Divers Den has been operating in Cairns for over 50 years, they have just celebrated their 50th anniversary operating a PADI dive training center here in Cairns (Wednesday – 11th September 2024). This makes them one of the longest-established dive training companies in town. Recognized as a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre, Deep Sea Divers Den’s learn-to-dive courses start 7 days per week. See more details below:

What course will I be doing with Deep Sea Divers Den? For those wanting to learn how to scuba dive, you will be booked on the PADI Open Water Diver Course. PADI stands for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors and is the world’s largest recreational scuba diving membership and training organization. Completing one of these courses gives you an open water scuba diving license, which will allow you to dive anywhere in the world to a maximum depth of 18 meters, within the limits of your certification (see the Diving Info tab below).

Deep Sea Divers Den has fantastic modern training facilities with an airconditioned classroom and a heated swimming pool. Each of the Open Water Courses includes a minimum of two (2) days of learning theory and practicing basic scuba skills in their Cairns classroom and pool. From there the course includes 3 days / 2 nights on the liveaboard boat Ocean Quest. You can also look at adding an Advanced Dive Certification to your Open Water Course, which can only be booked as a 6 Day package (includes night dives). Please contact us if you would like more information on this.

The liveaboard options include all chef-prepared meals, accommodation, and linen whilst you are at sea, please note the price varies pending on what type of cabin you want to stay in (Twin Share or Private Double bed Cabin). For more information, please see the itinerary and prices section.

Itinerary:

The Deep Sea Divers Den Learn to Dive Open Water Courses are very itinerary-friendly. They include all instruction (with professional PADI dive instructors), equipment, bus transfers to and from your downtown Cairns accommodation and the Great Barrier Reef. Please note: they do not include accommodation or meals in Cairns.

DAY 1 – CAIRNS: Deep Sea Divers Den provides free pick-ups for everyone staying in the Cairns city area, these start at 9 am (Northern Beaches transfers are also available, but will be charged.) This morning, it’s straight into the classroom to start learning about the theory of scuba diving and safe diving practices. Training is provided by PADI dive instructors and you will also receive a PADI Open Water Manual. There is a lunch break (lunch is not included) before you are allocated some diving equipment and commence basic skills training in the Deep Sea Divers Den swimming pool. Day 1 ends around 5 pm with transfers back to your accommodation. NB: Your instructor will give you some homework to take home tonight, so be prepared for some reading and light study on dive theory and safe practices.

DAY 2 – CAIRNS: Starts the same as yesterday, with city accommodation pick-ups from 9 am. This morning it’s straight into the swimming pool to continue your dive training. Today, you will get to know your dive equipment and become familiar with setting it up and putting it on, as well as completing your buddy checks. A quick break for lunch (lunch is not included) and then it’s back into the classroom for some more theory. You must complete a written test in conjunction with your course and all paperwork and instruction is provided. The day ends around 5 pm, with transfers back to your accommodation.

DAY 3 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:

LIVEABOARD: It’s an earlier start today with complimentary coach pick-ups from your Cairns city accommodation starting around 7.45am, taking you to the Deep Sea Divers Den day boat, AquaQuest. AquaQuest will take you to the Great Barrier Reef and provide the transfer to the liveaboard boat Ocean Quest. This is where you will complete your training, so remember to take your luggage with you (some weight/space restrictions apply, ask during the first two days). Your first two (2) training dives are completed onboard AquaQuest this morning, with a buffet lunch included in the course price. This afternoon you transfer over to the liveaboard boat and are allocated your cabin. There is no more diving today, but there will be opportunities to snorkel. All meals, accommodation, and linen are included in the course price. There is a licensed bar on board (alcoholic beverages are not included).

DAY 4 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:

LIVEABOARD: Wake up on the Great Barrier Reef! Today is the day you complete your training and become a PADI certified Open Water Diver. There are two (2) more training dives today, where you will complete your skill requirements. Once your instructor is confident you can dive safely, they will complete your training. You can then enjoy another afternoon fun dive followed by a night dive.

DAY 5 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:

LIVEABOARD: It’s your first full day of scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef as a certified diver! Last night you may have chosen to take advantage of the night dive, which would have given you a very different perspective on the Great Barrier Reef. Today there is the opportunity to complete three (3) more scuba dives, at different dive locations, with your dive buddy. Dive times and locations will vary, but you can be assured of some excellent diving. The last dive will be completed by 2 pm before you disembark from the liveaboard boat and return to Cairns on the day boat. You will arrive back in Cairns around 4.30 pm: this completes your 5 Day Deep Sea Divers Den Open Water Course. If you have chosen the 6 Day Liveaboard + Advanced Certification Course, you stay on the boat again tonight and have the chance to complete more dives, including another night dive, and complete your next level of dive certification! More information is below.

DAY 6 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:

LIVEABOARD: Those wanting to complete their PADI Advanced Certification, will have commenced their training dives for this course during day 5. This morning you complete those training dives and even have time for a pleasure dive. Assuming you have passed all criteria, you will be signed off as an Advanced Diver this afternoon, before disembarking the liveaboard boat to return to Cairns on the day boat. You will arrive back in Cairns around 4.30 pm. This completes your 6 Day Deep Sea Divers Den Open Water Course + Advanced Certification course.

Diving:

The minimum age to learn to scuba dive is 10 years old. There are some basic swimming requirements, which you will need to demonstrate during the course. These include being able to swim for 200m without stopping and treading water for 10 minutes, without touching the bottom or side. These tests are for your own safety and are completed in the swimming pool in Cairns during the first two days.

Please note: You may be required to complete an Australian Dive Medical AS4005.1 Certification prior to starting a dive course. Please note that some medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes and heart conditions) will preclude you from learning to dive. For more information, please visit the Dive Medical page.

The PADI Open Water Course is internationally recognised and will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need, to dive anywhere in the world to a maximum depth of 18m, when diving with a buddy. All instruction manuals are included in the course cost. At completion you are not certified for solo diving or deep diving.

You will spend two days in Cairns, learning the core skills needed to scuba dive safely with a PADI Diver Instructor, before completing your training in the open waters of the Great Barrier Reef. If you are nervous in the water, make sure you let them know, as the instructors are only too happy to spend extra time with you in the pool, before you head out to sea.

The maximum class sizes are as follows: 10 students to 1 instructor for pool sessions; 8 students to 1 instructor for the open water Great Barrier Reef diving. The number of scuba dives you will complete, depends on which course you choose. Please see below.

  • 5 Day Liveaboard Course: 4 training dives, become certified and have up to 5 pleasure dives, including a night dive.

Snorkeling:

These are learning to dive courses, there may be time between dives to try some snorkeling. Generally, you will be busy before and after each dive. The courses concentrate on diving and not snorkeling.

TOUR NOTES:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.
