Great Adventures, a part of the Quicksilver Group, provides a full-day tour from Cairns to Green Island. They have a fleet of boats running between Cairns, Green Island and the Outer Great Barrier Reef. It only takes 45 minutes by boat from Cairns to Green Island. The boats are large TWIN hull catamarans and very stable in the water.

Why choose Green Island for your day tour destination? Green Island is a 12 hectare coral cay island which has developed over hundreds of years and boasts rainforest vegetation and sandy beaches with offshore seagrass beds and fringing reefs. The island has a private resort on it with day tour facilities including a swimming pool, bar, bistro, café and restaurant. Great Adventures also offer day tour visitors the option of scuba diving (introductory or certified) [more on this in the tabs below], glass bottom boat tours and guided snorkel tours. Other optional activities include seawalker, scenic helicopter flights and a visit to the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat.

The Great Adventures Green Island full-day tours include return transfers from Cairns to Green Island, aboard their fast, air-conditioned catamarans, tea and coffee (on boarding the boat, before departure from Cairns), self-guided island eco-walk, choice of glass bottom boat tour or snorkeling equipment and use of the resort’s day facilities. Snorkelling can be done from the beach and we’ve got some tips on the best Green Island snorkeling locations.

Optional Extra Cost – The Boat Snorkel Trip – The boat snorkel trip allows you to experience much more of Green Island’s amazing marine life. After a short 7-minute boat ride offshore, you will be at one of our four snorkel sites, about 1.5km from Green Island. Be ready to snorkel amongst colorful marine life and coral gardens, lifeguards will supervise and direct you to the best areas of the site. (buoyancy vests included on the boat snorkel trip)

Itinerary:

Check-in for the Great Adventures Green Island full day tour is at their counter, inside the Reef Fleet Terminal. You should aim to check-in at least 15-minutes prior to your booked departure time, to collect boarding passes and wander down to the boat. Complimentary tea and coffee are served on boarding (and packed up prior to departure) and the transfer time over to Green Island is approximately 45-minutes. There’s inside and outside seating.

Time on the island all depends on what full-day package you have booked. To return to Cairns, the Great Adventures catamaran will be moored at the Green Island jetty. You should be ready at the jetty approximately 15-minutes before your booked departure time.

Diving:

Great Adventures provides introductory (no experience needed) and certified diving at Green Island. All diving is conducted on the offshore fringing reefs, with a boat tender transfer from the island. Great Adventures has a Dive Shop in the Green Island Resort facilities and divers must ‘check-in’ here before their booked dive times.

There are three (3) dive times available during a normal day: 10.30am – 1pm – 2.30pm. Certified divers can choose to take one (1) or two (2) dives (as long as you catch the 8.30am boat with a 4.30pm return time) during their Green Island day tour. All Green Island diving is guided and all equipment and training is included in the dive price and provided on the island. Please note: Divers will be required to complete a medical questionnaire prior to diving.

INTRODUCTORY DIVES: This is one of the easiest places to try an introductory dive, with your initial scuba session conducted in the Green Island resort swimming pool. You do not need any experience to try an introductory dive: all equipment and training is provided. Once you have completed the pool session, it’s out to the offshore reefs for some guided diving with your dive master. You must be at least 12 years of age to participate in an introductory dive and you will need to complete a dive medical questionnaire prior to diving.

CERTIFIED DIVING: Certified divers can choose one (1) or two (2) guided dives at Green Island (see times / details outlined above). All diving is guided and all equipment and briefings is included in the tour price. Scuba diving at Green Island is conducted on the offshore fringing reefs. Due to the proximity to the island visibility varies, pending current and conditions. Maximum dive depth is generally no more than 12m. You will be required to show your Divers License and complete Dive Medical paperwork, prior to diving.

Snorkeling:

Green Island has fringing reefs and offshore sea grass beds. Snorkelling can be done in a few different ways. Great Adventures day tour visitors can choose between including snorkelling equipment or a glass bottom boat tour in their standard tour price. If you have chosen snorkelling equipment, then you can snorkel for free from the beach. Some of the beaches are patrolled by lifeguards and we have tips on the best Green Island snorkelling locations. You can also choose to book a boat snorkel trip. This takes you to the offshore fringing reefs (too far to swim from the beach) where you can snorkel with hard and soft corals and see more reef than you will from the beach. The boat snorkel trips are in addition to your standard day tour price and can be booked on board the boat, on the day.

TOUR NOTES:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.

Inclusions: Tea & coffee served on the boat until departure from Cairns, choice of a glass-bottom boat tour or use of snorkeling equipment, use of resort’s exclusive swimming pool and self-guided island eco walks.
