Fitzroy Island & Sea Kayaking

Full Day | Operates: Daily | Departs: 8.40am | Transfers available: No, make own way

There is just one sea kayaking island tour from Cairns and this is it! This is a great day out, combining transfers to and from Cairns, time to explore tropical Fitzroy Island, a three (3) hour guided sea kayaking tour, snorkelling and other water sports activities.

Fitzroy Island is a continental island which is about 30km offshore from Cairns. Continental means that it once used to be connected to the mainland, but was separated hundreds of thousands of years ago by rising water levels. The 339 hectare island is mostly protected national park with a wide variety of terrain and vegetation including fringing tropical reefs, coral beaches, mangroves, open woodland and rainforest. It also features a resort with restaurant and bar facilities.

The Fitzroy Island sea kayaking adventure day tour includes the three (3) hour guided sea kayaking tour (with all equipment and training provided: no previous experience necessary), a picnic lunch, snorkelling equipment (mask, fins and snorkel) and free use of the ocean trampoline. You sea kayak adventure is in the morning, giving you the afternoon to explore this tropical island with its coral and sand beaches, rainforest walks and for the more strenuous, a lighthouse walk or summit walk. Or, you can just choose to chill out at the island bar and have a few drinks.

Your picnic lunch, which can be enjoyed anywhere on the island, includes fresh roll or wrap, seasonal fruit, energy fruit bar and bottle of water. Please note the minimum age for participation in the sea kayaking tour is 14 years: sea kayaking is not suitable for pregnant women.

This day tour is run by Raging Thunder and commences with check-in at the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal from 8am. Your transfer vessel is called the Fitzroy Flyer, which is moored a short walk away, at the nearby Marlin Marina. Boarding is from 8.15am onwards: the boat departs as soon as all guests are on board.

The Fitzroy Flyer catamaran has indoor and outdoor seating and provides a fast, smooth ride to nearby Fitzroy Island, which takes around 45-minutes (pending weather). On arrival at the island you follow the signs to the beach activity hire hut, right next to the jetty, which is where you’ll meet your sea kayaking guide. The tours depart directly from the beach, with all instruction and safety briefings provided before you get in the water. The waters around Fitzroy Island are generally calm and the tour journey is picked to maximise your experience on the day, pending conditions. On completion of the three hour sea kayaking tour, you return to the beach, pick-up lunch and then have the rest of the day to explore and relax.

There’s plenty to do. You can snorkel from the beach, play on the ocean trampoline or explore the island’s many self-guided walking trails. We suggest taking bottled water with you on the walks, as most of them are quite strenuous, especially the lighthouse trail and summit walking track (which takes you 269m up the mountain). You must be back on the boat no later than 4.30pm for the return journey, which will see you arrive into Cairns around 5.15pm.
