Frankland Islands Cruise and Dive offer something a little different to most Cairns reef tours. What’s different? Firstly, departure is from Deeral, which is approximately a 40-minute drive south from Cairns. Secondly, this reef day tour includes a freshwater river cruise and has the shortest open water crossing of all Cairns reef tours. Finally, the Frankland Islands are uninhabited but they are vegetated. So, unlike Green or Fitzroy, there are no resort facilities, but unlike Michaelmas or Upolu, there are trees and shaded areas to explore.

You can choose to self-drive or book transfers to the Deeral departure point. The Frankland Islands’ catamaran is moored on a jetty in the freshwater Mulgrave River. Your day commences with a calm water cruise (you may even spot a crocodile on the banks), before heading out into the open ocean and crossing to the nearby Frankland Islands. Here you can sunbake, beachcomb, snorkel and swim or just relax on the main beach.

Tour inclusions are a marine biologist snorkel tour, guided rockpool and island discovery tour, delicious tropical lunch, morning and afternoon tea and lycra suits (in summer). The day tour also includes a semi-submersible or glass bottom boat tour (pending weather conditions). You can also book optional extra certified or introductory scuba diving. The Frankland Islands are surrounded by fringing reefs, a short swim from the golden sandy beaches. At low tide the corals are just centimeters underneath the water, making this a great place to swim and snorkel. There’s lots of marine life and the guided island and snorkel tours are fascinating and informative.

Itinerary:

Check-in is on board the boat, which is moored in the Mulgrave River at Deeral (approx. 40-minute drive south of Cairns), from 8.20am. Departure is scheduled for 8.40am with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits served on board. Your day tour commences with a calm water cruise on the Mulgrave River, complete with commentary.

Arriving at the Frankland Islands around 10am, the crew disembark to set-up on the beach, before transferring passengers to and from the boat to the beach. Semi-submersible tours operate throughout the day, as does the rockpool and island tour. Lunch is served around 12.30pm with shaded seating available at picnic tables. There is plenty of time to dive, relax, explore, swim and snorkel with the boat not departing until 3pm (pending tides) and returning to Deeral around 4.30pm.

Diving:

The Frankland Islands Group has been protected as a national park since 1934 and its surrounding waters are home to a diverse array of Great Barrier Reef marine life. This is a great place for certified and introductory diving.

INTRODUCTORY DIVES: Frankland Islands Cruise and Dive offer the chance to do one (1) or two (2) introductory dives. No experience is necessary and all equipment and tuition is provided on board. You must be at least 12 years of age to participate in an introductory dive and you will need to complete a dive medical questionnaire on board the boat.

CERTIFIED DIVING: Certified divers will enjoy the marine life around the Frankland Islands Group. You can do one (1) or two (2) certified dives and all equipment and dive site briefings are provided. You will be required to show your Divers License and complete Dive Medical paperwork on board, prior to diving. Equipment and dive site briefings are all provided on board the boat.

Snorkeling:

Snorkelling around the Frankland Islands is excellent. The islands have fringing reefs, which are a short and comfortable swim from the sandy beach. Pending tide, the coral reefs may be anywhere from a few metres beneath the surface, to just a few centimetres. You can expect to see lots of bright fish, clams, starfish, corals, sea cucumbers and more. Snorkelling equipment and tuition is all provided in the tour price, as is a snorkel tour with a marine biologist. Access to and from the water is from the beach. Transfers are provided to and from the boat to the beach.

Normanby Island is a National Park

Frankland Islands Cruise Review

A great day tour which takes you to the Frankland Islands Group, five separate islands that sometimes join at low tide. The river cruise is gentle and scenic, the island is glorious on a warm, winter’s day in the tropics and lunch is delicious. This tour would be enjoyed by people of all ages and...

Tour Notes:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.

Inclusions: Tropical buffet lunch, morning & afternoon tea, snorkeling with a marine biologist, snorkeling equipment, Mulgrave River cruise with commentary and guided rockpool and island discovery tour.

Additional Extras: Return coach transfers are currently not available.
