Deep Sea Divers Den has been operating in Cairns for over 30 years, making them one of the longest established dive companies in town. Recognised as a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre, Deep Sea Divers Den offers the PADI Advanced Open Water Course on its Great Barrier Reef liveaboard boat, off Cairns. This course can be booked as a 2 or 3 day liveaboard option with participants able to choose between Quad Share, Twin and Double cabins (price varies), allowing you to tailor the course to suit your itinerary and budget. Please see the itinerary and prices tabs below for more information.

The Deep Sea Divers Den Advanced Open Water Course has daily departures. This is thanks to Deep Sea Divers Den having a day tour boat and liveaboard boat. The liveaboard boat sleeps a maximum of 30 guests (first in best dressed for cabin allocations) with hot freshwater showers on board and high crew to guest ratio.

During your stay at sea, the liveaboard boat will move to different locations around the Great Barrier Reef, allowing you to explore different sites each day. Itinerary:

The Deep Sea Divers Den Advanced Open Water Courses are very itinerary friendly, starting any day of the week, pending demand. It includes all instruction (with professional PADI dive instructors), diving manuals and equipment, transfers to and from your accommodation and the Great Barrier Reef.

This course can be booked as a 2 day / 1 night or 3 day / 2 night option. All training dives and course instruction is completed in the first two days (which will be the same, regardless of which option you book): the three day option includes one extra day of pleasure diving. See more notes on this in the itinerary below (day 1 is the same for either booking).

DAY 1 – CAIRNS TO GREAT BARRIER REEF:

Transfers from Cairns city accommodation is included in your course cost: these commence at around 7.45am. The coach will take you to Deep Sea Divers Den’s Cairns office on Draper Street, where check-in and any final payments (reef tax) are made and boarding passes are issued: from there, the coach takes you over to Marlin Marina (a five minute drive). Boarding their day boat, which is a fast and comfortable catamaran, enjoy some complimentary tea and coffee before the 8.45am departure from Cairns. It’s a 90-minute transfer to the Great Barrier Reef and during this time, you will meet with the on-board PADI dive instructors. There’s diving on board the day boat today, before your transfer to the liveaboard boat at 2.30pm.

The transfer is completed quickly and easily, with guests just stepping over from one boat to the next. You are welcomed aboard the new boat and given an overview of the vessel and allocated your cabin number. After dropping your bags into the cabin, it’s straight into the water for training dives as a part of your Advanced Open Water Course. Dinner is served at 6pm and after that, there’s a night dive, before dessert is served to end the day.

DAY 2 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:

Wake up early on the Great Barrier Reef! There’s three dives this morning, and assuming you meet and pass all of the criteria and skill tests set by your PADI Advanced Open Water Dive Instructor, you will have completed your course before lunch.

2 DAY / 1 NIGHT COURSE: For those that have booked the 2 day / 1 night option, you will be out of the water by 11.30am, giving you time for a freshwater shower and to pack-up your cabin before lunch is served at 12.30pm. After lunch, you can chill out in the air-conditioned interior or on the exterior sundecks for a few hours. The day boat collects you around 2.30pm, departing the Great Barrier Reef for its return to Cairns at 3pm. Pending weather and conditions, you should arrive back into town at 4.30pm, with coach transfers back to your accommodation. This completes your 2 day / 1 night Deep Sea Divers Den Advanced Open Water Course.

3 DAY / 2 NIGHT COURSE: Lunch is served at 12.30pm and then you’ve got a couple of hours to just relax, while the liveaboard boat moves to a new reef site. You can have a sleep in your cabin, relax in the air-conditioned interior or enjoy some time on the exterior sun deck. During this time, the day boat will stop off and drop off new guests, while picking up any departing guests. Everyone is allowed back into the water from 3.30pm for more diving and snorkelling: there’s 2.5 hours until dinner is served at 6pm. There is the option for another night dive tonight, which is followed by dessert being served from 8pm.

DAY 3 – GREAT BARRIER REEF TO CAIRNS:

A morning of diving the Great Barrier Reef as an Advanced Open Water scuba diver. There is the chance to complete up to three (3) dives this morning, but you can do as many, or as few of these, as you like. The first dive is at 6.30am and is a highly recommended way to start the day! This is the time when you can see the marine life changing shifts, the night time hunters are all retiring for the day, while the day time fishes are just starting to become more active. In particular, watch out for large schools of Bumphead Parrotfish, fast moving Trevally and the always striking Lionfish.

You will be out of the water today no later than 11.30am, giving you time for a freshwater shower and to pack-up your cabin before lunch is served at 12.30pm. After lunch, chill out in the air-conditioned interior or on the exterior sundecks for a few hours, before the day boat collects you around 2.30pm, to take you back to Cairns. Pending weather and conditions, you should arrive back into town at 4.30pm, with coach transfers back to your accommodation. This completes your 3 day / 2 night Deep Sea Divers Den Advanced Open Water Course.

Diving:

You must already have an Open Water Dive Certification to book an Advanced Open Water Course. Deep Sea Divers Den will ask to see evidence of this, being your existing Dive License and a copy of your current Log Book.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Course is internationally recognised. At Deep Sea Divers Den, the course includes four core modules (navigation diving; night diving; deep diving; peak performance buoyancy) with participants able to choose from one of the following for the final module: boat diving; search and recovery; underwater naturalist; underwater photography; AWARE fish identification.

On successful completion of the core modules, you will have the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to dive anywhere in the world to a maximum depth of 40m, when diving with a buddy. In addition, you will have learnt to navigate under the water (always helpful when finding the boat) and the core skills and techniques required for night diving / diving with limited visibility and practising peak performance buoyancy. You will also have learnt another skill, depending on what speciality module you selected with your PADI Instructor. At completion, you are not certified for solo diving.

All dive training is completed at sea, on the Great Barrier Reef and all manuals, equipment and instruction is included in the course price.

The number of scuba dives you will complete, depends on which course you book: please see below. Each of these options includes the mandatory 5 training dives (one for each module) which are completed as a part of the course.

  • 2 day / 1 night Course: up to 6 dives, including 1 night dive.
  • 3 day / 2 night Course: up to 10 dives, including 2 night dives.

Snorkeling:

In between dives you can snorkel as much as you like. All snorkel gear is also provided.

Spent just one night aboard, wish we could have stayed longer but still well worth it. The staff were incredibly friendly, always knew our names and were keen to help. Managed to squeeze loads of dives in a short space of time including a night shark dive which was breathtaking. Would definitely recommend it, even if it’s just to play with Wally!

This trip was our first overnight diving adventure and it lived up to expectation. The reef sites were full of sea life and color. The food and accommodation was perfect after 4-5 dives and everything was well laid out and explained by the dive master. This is by no means a 5 star vessel but when the focus is on diving who cares that you…
