Cairns Dive Centre offers budget snorkeling, introductory and certified diving (for more information on these activities, please see below tabs) day tours to the Great Barrier Reef, aboard their M.V. Reef-Kist catamaran. This day tour includes two stops at the dive mooring Fish Bowel located at Hastings Reef and a second stop at the nearby Subrey Cay. Passengers can swim from the boat over to Subrey Cay and relax on the beach in Low Tide. This trip is recommended for those wanting a value for money day tour to the Great Barrier Reef.

The 17.5m M.V. Reef-Kist catamaran is licensed to carry up to 75 passengers, with daily guest numbers limited to 40 people. It is a twin hull catamaran with a top speed is 18 knots. You will visit two different reef sites during your day tour, enjoying up to four hours on the reef.

Cairns Dive Centre has been providing Cairns Great Barrier Reef day tours for over 30 years and is licensed to visit seven different reefs including Milln, Moore, Briggs, Thetford, Sudbury, Channel or Elford. They will choose the best reefs and sites on the day, to maximise your experience, pending weather and conditions.

Water entry is easy, via the submerged steps at the back of the boat: equipment and safety briefings are provided during the trip to the reef. Complimentary tea and coffee is served on arrival and passengers can relax in the air-conditioned interior or on the exterior sun decks. A hearty buffet lunch is served between 12-1pm and includes a selection of hot and cold dishes and salads.

Itinerary:

Check-in and boarding for the Cairns Dive Centre day tour on M.V. Reef-Kist starts at 7am on the boat, which is moored on E-Finger at Cairns’ Marlin Marina (adjacent to the Pier Shopping Centre and Salt House restaurant). Welcome tea and coffee is served on boarding, with departure from Cairns at 7.30am. On its way to the Great Barrier Reef, M.V. Reef-Kist will stop first at Fitzroy Island and then at the liveaboard boat M.V. Kangaroo Explorer, to pick-up and drop off other passengers.

As day tour guests, your first chance to get in the water for snorkelling and diving is at around 10am. A hot and cold buffet lunch is served from 12pm to 1pm and while you eat, M.V. Reef-Kist moves to its second reef location for the day. There’s two hours to enjoy the afternoon’s in-water activities, before M.V. Reef-Kist returns to Kangaroo Explorer (for passenger transfer) and then begins its return journey to Cairns via Fitzroy Island. You will arrive back into Cairns around 4.50pm.

Diving:

Choose between one (1) or two (2) scuba dives on the Cairns Dive Centre Great Barrier Reef day tour. Both certified and introductory diving (no experience necessary) is available, with all equipment and instruction included in the dive tour price. Certified divers can choose guided or unguided dives.

INTRODUCTORY DIVES: Cairns Dive Centre’s professional dive crew / instructors offer introductory dive sessions during day tour trips. No experience is necessary and all equipment and tuition is provided on board the boat, during your trip to the reef. Chance to dive at two different reef locations.

CERTIFIED DIVING: Certified divers can choose one (1) or two (2) dives at two different reef sites. Cairns Dive Centre offers guided (extra cost) and unguided diving (no solo diving). Unguided divers can go with their own buddy, or be paired up with someone else on board. All divers receive equipment and dive site briefings: which is included in the dive tour price. Guided dives are charged at $15 per person, per dive, in addition to the dive tour price. Maximum dive time is one hour with a maximum depth of 18m. Divers are given the choice between lycra and wet suits and water entry is via the submerged steps at the back of the boat. You will be required to show you dive license and preferably your log book.

Snorkeling:

Cairns Dive Centre visits open water reef sites, which means the reefs are in the open ocean (rather than being close to an island, pontoon or sand cay) and can have currents. However, the waters are sheltered within the Great Barrier Reef and flotation / buoyancy devices are available. This day tour is recommended to people who are comfortable swimming in the open ocean. All equipment is included in the ticket price and tuition is provided on board, for those new to snorkelling. Access to the water is via submerged stairs at the back of the boat.
