Deep Sea Divers Den: PADI Open Water Dive Course
Deep Sea Divers Den has been operating in Cairns for over 30 years, making them one of the longest established dive companies in town. Recognised as a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre, Deep Sea Divers Den’s learn to dive courses start daily and can be booked in a range of options (budget, liveaboard and multi-day), allowing you to tailor your course to suit your budget and itinerary.
What course will I be doing with Deep Sea Divers Den? For those wanting to learn how to scuba dive, you will be booked on the PADI Open Water Diver Course. PADI stands for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors and is the world’s largest recreational diving membership and training organisation. Completing one of these courses gives you an Open Water scuba diving license, which will allow you to dive anywhere in the world, within the limits of your certification (see the Diving Info tab below).
Deep Sea Divers Den has its own training facilities and pool in Cairns. They also have a day boat and a liveaboard boat, which is how they offer complete flexibility in starting your course on any day of the week. Each of the Open Water Courses includes a minimum of two (2) days learning theory and practising basic scuba skills in their Cairns classroom and pool. From there, the courses differ. The 4 Day Budget Course includes 2 day trips to the Great Barrier Reef, the 4 Day Liveaboard Course includes 2 days / 1 night on their liveaboard boat and the 5 Day Liveaboard Course includes 3 days / 2 nights on the liveaboard boat. You can also look at adding an Advanced Dive Certification to your Open Water Course, which can only be booked as a 6 Day package (includes night dives). The liveaboard options include all meals, accommodation and linen whilst you are at sea (not the Cairns component): the price varies pending what type of cabin you want to stay in (Quad Share, Twin Share or Double). For more information, please see the itinerary and prices section.

The Deep Sea Divers Den Learn to Dive Open Water Courses are very itinerary friendly, starting any day of the week, pending demand. They include all instruction (with professional PADI dive instructors), equipment, transfers to and from your accommodation and the Great Barrier Reef. Please note: they do not include accommodation or meals in Cairns.
The first 2 days are the same for all Deep Sea Divers Den Open Water Dive Courses: from day 3 the itinerary varies, pending which package you book (Budget or Liveaboard). This is detailed below.
DAY 1 – CAIRNS: Deep Sea Divers Den provides free pick-ups for everyone staying in the Cairns city area, these start at 9am (Northern Beaches transfers are also available, but will be charged.) This morning, it’s straight into the classroom to start learning about the theory of scuba diving and safe diving practises. Training is provided by PADI dive instructors and you will also receive a PADI Open Water Manual. If you have not already completed a Dive Medical, then this can be arranged this morning (at extra cost: this is a compulsory part of the course). There is a lunch break (lunch is not included) before you are allocated some diving equipment and commence basic skills training in the Deep Sea Divers Den swimming pool. Day 1 ends around 5pm with transfers back to your accommodation. NB: Your instructor will give you some homework to take home tonight, so be prepared for some reading and light study on dive theory and safe practices.
DAY 2 – CAIRNS: Starts the same as yesterday, with city accommodation pick-ups from 9am. This morning it’s straight into the swimming pool to continue your dive training. Today, you will get to know your dive equipment and become familiar with setting it up and putting it on, as well as completing your buddy checks. A quick break for lunch (lunch is not included) and then it’s back into the classroom for some more theory. You must complete a written test in conjunction with your course and all paperwork and instruction is provided. The day ends around 5pm, with transfers back to your accommodation.
DAY 3 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:
BUDGET: The exciting part of your PADI Open Water Dive Course starts today, with your first trip and training scuba dives on the Great Barrier Reef. Deep Sea Divers Den will collect you from your city accommodation around 7.45am, transferring you to their day boat SeaQuest. Complimentary tea and coffee is served on boarding and the boat departs for the Great Barrier Reef around 8.45am. Today you will complete the first two (2) training dives needed for your certification. Lunch, morning and afternoon tea are all included today. You will get back into Cairns around 4.30pm.
LIVEABOARD: It’s an earlier start today with complimentary coach pick-ups from your Cairns city accommodation starting around 7.45am, taking you to the Deep Sea Divers Den day boat, SeaQuest. SeaQuest will take you to the Great Barrier Reef and provide the transfer to the liveaboard boat, where you will complete your training, so remember to take your luggage with you (some weight / space restrictions apply, ask during the first two days). Your first two (2) training dives are completed on board SeaQuest this morning, with a buffet lunch included in the course price. This afternoon you transfer over to the liveaboard boat and are allocated your cabin. There is no more diving today, but there will be opportunities to snorkel. All meals, accommodation and linen are included in the course price. There is a licensed bar on board (alcoholic beverages are not included).
DAY 4 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:
BUDGET: Today is the day you become a PADI certified Open Water Diver. The coach will collect you at 7.45am and it’s the same as yesterday, heading down to the day boat for the 90-minute transfer to the Great Barrier Reef. This morning you complete the final two (2) training dives needed to finalise the dive requirements / practical skills demonstration for your Open Water Dive License. Assuming all goes well, you will be certified before lunch, giving you time for your first scuba dive as a certified diver this afternoon! You will get back into Cairns around 4.30pm: this completes your 4 Day Deep Sea Divers Den Open Water Course.
LIVEABOARD: Wake up on the Great Barrier Reef! Today is the day you complete your training and become a PADI certified Open Water Diver. There are two (2) more training dives today, where you will complete your skill requirements. Once your instructor is confident you can dive safely, they will complete your training. Pending timing, they may be time for one ‘fun’ dive today, before you disembark the liveaboard boat and return to Cairns on the day boat. You will arrive back into Cairns around 4.30pm: this completes your 4 Day Deep Sea Divers Den Open Water Course. If you have chosen the 5 Day Liveaboard, you stay on the boat tonight and have the chance to take a night dive! More information below.
DAY 5 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:
LIVEABOARD: It’s your first full day of scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef as a certified diver! Last night you may have chosen to take advantage of the night dive, which would have given you a very different perspective on the Great Barrier Reef. Today there is the opportunity to complete three (3) more scuba dives, at different dive locations, with your dive buddy (sans the instructor). Dive times and locations will vary, but you can be assured of some excellent diving. The last dive will be completed by 2pm, before you disembark from the liveaboard boat and return to Cairns on the day boat. You will arrive back into Cairns around 4.30pm: this completes your 5 Day Deep Sea Divers Den Open Water Course. If you have chosen the 6 Day Liveaboard + Advanced Certification Course, you stay on the boat again tonight and have the chance to complete more dives, including another night dive, and complete your next level of dive certification! More information below.
DAY 6 – GREAT BARRIER REEF:
LIVEABOARD: Those wanting to complete their PADI Advanced Certification, will have commenced their training dives for this course during day 5. This morning you complete those training dives and even have time for a pleasure dive. Assuming you have passed all criteria, you will be signed off as an Advanced Diver this afternoon, before disembarking the liveaboard boat to return to Cairns on the day boat. You will arrive back into Cairns around 4.30pm. This completes your 6 Day Deep Sea Divers Den Open Water Course + Advanced Certification course.
The minimum age to learn to scuba dive is 12 years old. There are some basic swimming requirements, which you will need to demonstrate during the course. These include being able to swim for 200m without stopping and treading water for 10 minutes, without touching the bottom or side. These tests are for your own safety and are completed in the swimming pool in Cairns during the first two days.
Please note: You may be required to complete an Australian Dive Medical Certification prior to starting a dive course. Please note that some medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes and heart conditions) will preclude you from learning to dive. For more information, please visit the Dive Medical page.
The PADI Open Water Course is internationally recognised and will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need, to dive anywhere in the world to a maximum depth of 18m, when diving with a buddy. All instruction manuals are included in the course cost. At completion you are not certified for solo diving or deep diving.
You will spend two days in Cairns, learning the core skills needed to scuba dive safely with a PADI Diver Instructor, before completing your training in the open waters of the Great Barrier Reef. If you are nervous in the water, make sure you let them know, as the instructors are only too happy to spend extra time with you in the pool, before you head out to sea.
The maximum class sizes are as follows: 10 students to 1 instructor for pool sessions; 8 students to 1 instructor for the open water Great Barrier Reef diving. The number of scuba dives you will complete, depends on which course you choose. Please see below.

- 4 Day Liveaboard Course: 4 training dives, become certified and have 1 pleasure dive (time permitting).
