Coral Spawning Night Trip – Tusa Dive

Tour Type: Night Trip | Operates: 3 nights of the year | Departs: 6pm | Returns: 1.30am | Transfers: only drop off at end

HIGHLIGHTS:

AVAILABLE ON THIS TOUR:

Tusa Dive provides specialised night tours for the Great Barrier Reef’s annual coral spawning. This natural phenomenon is the one time of the year the reef’s corals reproduce and it only happens on a few nights of the year. The Great Barrier Reef’s coral spawning night dive and snorkel trips are scheduled to occur in November / December of each year. (Send us an email for the next planned night dive coral spawnign trip for 2018.)

Tusa Dive has been running their specialised coral spawning trips for several years. As operators of the successful Tusa Dive day tour boat, which has more than 20 years’ experience visiting the Great Barrier Reef, Tusa know the best places to witness this amazing natural phenomena. Although there are no guarantees you will see spawning (this is a natural event after all and does not run to our human schedule all of the time), worst case scenario is you will enjoy an amazing night time dive / snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef.

Tusa’s T6 vessel is licensed to carry up to 120 guests, but limits coral spawning trips to just 50 people, for maximum passenger comfort and enjoyment. There are hot water showers, especially appreciated with night dives / snorkels, and hydraulically lowered platforms provide easy access to and from the water. Travel time to and from the reef is around 90-minutes; a coral spawning presentation and hot buffet dinner are all included in the tour price. There’s time for two dives / snorkels and torches and glow sticks are included in your night trip.

Itinerary:

Check-in for Tusa Dive coral spawning night trips is directly at the boat, which is moored at A-Finger, at Cairns’ Marlin Marina (directly adjacent to the Reef Fleet Terminal and Cairns Harbour Lights). You must make your own way there. Boarding commences at 5.30pm with a scheduled departure of 6pm. Trip and dive briefings will be provided by the crew during the 90-minute transfer to the Great Barrier Reef. There will also be an informative marine biologist presentation about coral spawning.

The trip includes two (2) dives / snorkels and runs like dive – eat – dive. The evening meal is a hot buffet dinner accompanied by complimentary tea, coffee and soup. The boat stays at the same reef location all night, helping with your in-water orientation. Torches and glow sticks are included in the package price. The boat departs the reef at around 11.30pm and arrives into Cairns between 1 and 1.30am: complimentary drop offs are provided to Cairns city accommodation.

Diving:

Please note that as this is night diving trip, there are no introductory dives available. You must be a certified diver to participate in the coral spawning dive trip. Tusa Dive provides all diving customers with top quality equipment including wetsuits, dive computers, mask, snorkel, fins, torches and glow sticks. If you have your own equipment, there is a tanks and weights package price too. Two (2) 40 minute certified dives are included in the package price and guides are in the water, so you can choose guided or unguided.

Snorkeling:

Can you see coral spawning snorkelling? Yes you can. Although the gamete release happens down at the corals (best witnessed by scuba divers), they float to the water’s surface and are easily seen by snorkelers. Tusa Dive provides guided coral spawning snorkel tours and everyone receives a torch as a part of their equipment for the evening. All snorkelers are provided with ‘diver’ quality masks, snorkels, booties and fins, as well as a choice of lycra or wet suits. Flotation devices are also provided free of charge. Access to and from the water is from a submerged platform at the rear of the boat.

Staghorn Corals spawning en masse

Tusa Dive – Coral Spawning Review

Once a year, the over 400 different types of Great Barrier Reef corals reproduce en masse, in an event known as Coral Spawning. Coral Spawning always occurs at night, with the release of the corals’ eggs and sperm tied to the moon’s presence, light and lunar cycles. In 2011, we witnessed the magic of Coral...

Tour Notes:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.
