Cairns Whale Watching Tours

Tour Type: Half Day | Operates: Daily (Seasonal) | Departs: 9.30am | Returns: 1pm | Transfers: Yes, extra

HIGHLIGHTS:

AVAILABLE ON THIS TOUR:

Cairns Whale Watching Tours operate seasonally, between July and September. Why are they seasonal? The whales only make their appearance on the Great Barrier Reef in the winter months. In summer, they spend their time in the cooler waters of the Antarctic.

Each year over 4,000 whales are believed to make the annual migration north, to the Great Barrier Reef, where they deliver and nurse their calves. For this reason, Cairns whale watchers often have the chance to see whale mothers with their young offspring – very cute! The most frequently seen species on a Cairns whale watching tour is the Humpback Whale, although Dwarf Minke Whales are also seen in these waters.

The half-day tours have morning departures (with afternoons sometimes added, pending demand, and whale activity) and are conducted on a spacious 22m catamaran. Passengers can choose between comfortable seating in the air-conditioned interior, or on the exterior sundeck. Complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits are available at the downstairs bar. The boat departs Cairns at 9.30 am and on the way to the reef, the captain talks about the Humpback Whales and provides some information on their annual migration. This tour provides around two (2) hours to look for the whales and then spend time watching them. It begins its return journey around 12.15 pm getting you back to Cairns at 1 pm.

Started back in 2009, the Cairns Whale Watching Tours offer a 99% success rate with whale encounters. You can purchase souvenir photos onboard.

This boat offers excellent ride stability in most weather conditions and has indoor and outdoor seating. Complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits are served on arrival, with a scheduled 9.30am departure. Travel time is usually around 45-minutes each way, providing around two (2) hours whale watching time. A commentary is provided during the day and the tour concludes with a 1pm return into Cairns. Souvenir photos are available for sale on board, as is preventative motion sickness medication.

Cairns Dive Adventures Trip Reviews

Cairns Whale Watching – Reef Magic Review

Whales are magnificent creatures and most people feel an affinity with these gentle giants of the deep. It is wonderful to see them in their natural environment, enjoying the “warm” waters of the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef off Cairns, during the Antarctic’s cold winter months. This half day tour provides a wonderful opportunity...

Tour Notes:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “Fit to dive” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.
